Women's Soccer Plays To A 0-0 Draw Against UMBC

PHILADELPHIA - For the third straight game, the Hawks' defense played stellar, limiting UMBC to just five shots as the Hawks earned a double-overtime 0-0 draw Friday evening at Sweeney Field. It marks the second time in as many games SJU has played to a 0-0 draw and the Hawks have played 310 minutes this season without allowing a goal.

In a contests that saw the Hawks (1-0-2) outshoot the Retrievers (1-1-1) 16-5, it was visiting UMBC who had the first scoring chance. In the 56th minute off a corner kick, Nikki Borretti headed the inbounding ball that glanced off the crossbar and away from the goal, allowing SJU to clear.

Saint Joseph's best chance came in the opening minute of overtime as senior Mo Hawkins slid passed the defense on a pass. With the Retriervers' goalkeeper coming out to play the ball, Hawkins' shot missed just slightly to the left post, keeping the game knotted at 0-0.

Neither team would mount a major scoring attack in the second overtime as the game drew to a close.

Individually, Hawkins led SJU with six shots, while sophomore Olivia McEachern had four. Senior goalkeeper Lauren Jancuska earned her third shutout of the year as she faced just five shots, with none on net.

The Hawks return to action Sunday at Quinnipiac at 1 p.m.
