Men's Soccer Battles to Scoreless Draw with Wofford

PHILADELPHIA - For the third time in four matches, the Saint Joseph's men's soccer team battled for 110 minutes as the Hawks held a scoreless draw with Wofford on Sunday afternoon at Sweeney Field. Redshirt senior goalkeeper Andrew D'Ottavi (0-1-3) made five saves and senior midfielder Jimmy Reilly made a crucial team save in the 43rd minute to help the Crimson and Gray to their third tie of the season.

"We held strong and we battled today," said D'Ottavi after the match. "That's the type of team we are. That's what we have to do. We have to battle from start to finish."

D'Ottavi made two saves in the first half, two in the second half, and one huge save in the 94th minute to keep Wofford off the scoreboard and record his first shutout of the season and sixth of his career.

For the game, Wofford (0-3-1) held a slight advantage in shots (18-14) and corner kicks (6-4). The Terriers landed six shots on goal compared to the Hawks' two, but D'Ottavi and Reilly combined for all six saves on the day.

Saint Joseph's (0-1-3) saw junior forwards Alex Critzos and Mike Glazer land one shot on goal each. Senior defender Brendan Reilly continued his dominance on the back line, aiding in clearing the ball out of SJU's defensive area mutiple times throughout the match.

Freshmen Mori Diane and Mike Stuski each made their collegiate debuts. Diane went into the match in the 29th minute while Stuski checked in in the 35th minute of the first half.

The Hawks will look for their first win of the season next Saturday, September 14, when they host city-rival Temple in Philadelphia Soccer Six action. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on Sweeney Field.
