PHILADELPHIA – The Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team fell to Drexel, 9-5, on Sunday afternoon at Vidas Field. With the loss, the Hawks fall to 1-2 while Drexel improves to 2-0.

Saint Joseph's got on the scoreboard first, just five minutes into the game as sophomore attack Emily Bowers scored her fifth goal of the season at the 25:42 mark to give the Hawks the 1-0 advantage.

Drexel's Kelly Palace would then score back-to-back goals to put the Dragons ahead by one with 18:31 remaining in the first half. However SJU senior midfielder Michele Granger would respond with Saint Joseph's second tally of the day on an assist from Bowers to even out the score, 2-2, with just under 13 minutes left in the first.

From there, Drexel would go on a 6-1 run that would span the remainder of the first half and 10 minutes into the second to jump ahead, 8-3.

Saint Joseph's sophomores Kelly Phelan and Bianca Angstadt would sandwich a pair of Hawks goals around Drexel's ninth goal of the game and that score, 9-5, would stand as time expired.

Drexel held a 28-18 advantage in shots, but the Hawks were mainly affected by 27 turnovers, with 13 coming off of failed clear attempts. Drexel held a slight 9-7 edge in draw controls, with Phelan recording three for SJU. Each team was even in ground balls - 24 for the game and 12 in each half for both squads.

For the game, Bowers and senior attack Abby Ananian led the Hawks with one goal and one assist each while Phelan, Angstadt, and Granger added SJU's other goals. Phelan and fellow defender Brittany Hanrahan combined for seven ground balls and three caused turnovers.
