Men's Lacrosse Falls to #20 Penn, 14-4

PHILADELPHIA – An 11-1 Quaker run that spanned the final three periods handed Saint Joseph's a 14-4 loss at #20 Penn on Tuesday at Franklin Field. Redshirt junior attackman Ryan McGee led the Hawks in scoring with three goals and an assist.

"I thought our guys played really hard tonight," said Saint Joseph's head coach Taylor Wray. "I thought that we were ready to play and we saw some very positive things out there. But, we made too many mistakes and it felt like Penn capitalized on all of them."

Tied 3-3 at the conclusion of the first period, Penn (1-1) went on a 7-0 run to keep Saint Joseph's (1-2) scoreless through the second and third periods.

The Quakers added two more goals to start the fourth period, but junior midfielder Mike Dougherty would end SJU's scoring drought with the Hawks' fourth tally of the game to close the deficit, 12-4, with 7:38 remaining in regulation.

"Penn is an athletic team that plays at a very high tempo and I think some of our mistakes were attributed to playing at a such a fast pace," said Wray. "We made some mental mistakes, missed some ground balls and it seemed like on every mistake the ball was in the back of our net. I give a lot of credit to Penn."

Penn added two additional goals with under 1:09 to play to extend the Quakers' lead back to ten goals, 14-4, and that score would stand as time expired.

McGee and Dougherty (1G, 1A) led the Hawks in scoring while sophomore defenseman John Winchell recorded a team-best four ground balls and two caused turnovers.

In his first start of the season, junior goalkeeper Dustin Keen (0-1) made seven saves in 45:00. Freshman goalkeeper T.J. Jones played the final 30:00 in net.

For the game, and as a result of 11 shots in the fourth period, Saint Joseph's held a slight 35-32 edge in shots and was a perfect 16-for-16 in clear attempts, overall turning the ball over nine times less than the Quakers.

Although the contest proved to be a physical one as the team's combined for 11 penalties, those EMOs wouldn't have a crucial effect on scoring as each team only converted one goal apiece off of their EMOs. Penn did hold the advantage in face-off possession. The Quakers won 15-of-22 possessions from the X, led by Danny Feeney's 12-of-18 effort.

Penn and Saint Joseph's would alternate in goal scoring throughout the first five minutes of action. Penn got on the board just six seconds into the game to take the early 1-0 advantage, but McGee answered with a tally at the 12:55 mark to equalize the score at one goal apiece.

The Quakers then added their second goal at the 11:50 mark, but Saint Joseph's freshman midfielder Danny Manning would win the faceoff to give the Hawks possession following Penn's goal. From there, Dougherty found McGee to even the score, 2-2, with 11:26 remaining in the first period.

Penn would again take the lead with just under five minutes to go in the first, but the Hawks made a series of plays under the two-minute mark to equalize the score. McGee fired off a pair of shots at the 1:31and 1:10 marks, the second of which was saved by Penn goalkeeper Brian Feeney. Freshman attackman Ray Vandegrift picked up the ground ball to set McGee up for the shot, and the redshirt junior tallied his first of two goals to bring the Hawks into the second-period tied 3-3 with the Quakers.

Saint Joseph's returns to action this Saturday, March 1 at Wagner for the program's first Northeast Conference contest. Opening face-off at Hameline Field is set  for 1:00 p.m.
