HAMPTON, Va. - The Saint Joseph's softball team split its two games at the Hampton Invitational on Saturday as the Hawks topped Hartford, 9-8, in extra innings in the morning before falling to host Hampton, 8-0, in game two.
Versus Hartford, Saint Joseph's gave up a pair of runs in the top of the second, but rallied for five runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 5-2 advantage.
Senior Maria Ficca drew a bases-loaded walk to plate Sarah Yoos for the first run, while Madeline Brunck followed with a fielder's choice that scored Ashley Alden to tie the score at 2-2.
Junior Melissa Ruf put the Hawks ahead 4-2 on a two-run double, while Brunck would come around to score the fifth run on a wild pitch.
Hartford would regain the lead in the fifth, scoring four runs, but Saint Joseph's answered in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at 6-6 on a RBI triple by Alden that scored Kerrie Kortmann.
Saint Joseph's retook the lead in the bottom of the sixth, scoring twice to make it 8-6. A sacrifice fly by Yoos scored Nicole Palase to make it a 7-6 advantage, while Alden followed with a triple, scoring Kortmann to make it 8-6 in favor of the Hawks.
Unfortunately for SJU, Hartford rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh to force extra innings.
After three-straight outs to keep Hartford off the board in the top of the eighth, sophomore Brandi Harkness dropped a sacrifice bunt to score Ruf for the game-winning run.
At the plate, Brunck was 3-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI, while Ruf picked up a pair of RBIs.
In the circle, freshman Alex Dominici earned the win, finishing the final 1.2 innings, allowing no runs and one walk.
In game two, the Hawks' bats fell silent as they registered just two hits, courtesy of Kerrie Kortmann and Isabella Picard.
On the other side, Hampton scored eight runs on eight hits and took advantage of two SJU errors to earn the win.
Sophomore pitcher Liz Mendez dropped her first game of the season, falling to 2-1 with the loss.
"Today we didn't have our best showing as a team. Both sides, pitching and offense,were very inconsistent, but we are looking for a better start tomorrow," said head coach Terri Adams.
Saint Joseph's (3-3) caps play Sunday against Fairleight Dickinson at 9 a.m.
