PHILADELPHIA - The Saint Joseph's women's basketball team dropped its regular season finale to Fordham, 58-53, Sunday afternoon at Hagan Arena. The Hawks earned the fifth seed in the this week's Atlantic 10 Championship and will face either 12th seed George Mason or 13th seed Massachusetts at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Richmond Coliseum.
The Hawks (21-8, 10-6 A-10) fell behind by six to start, but battled back to take a 32-26 edge into halftime.
Saint Joseph's pushed its lead to nine, 40-31, in the early start of the second half on a jumper by sophomore Ciara Andrews at 15:35.
However, the Hawks' offense went cold from there as Fordham used a 14-2 run to tale a 45-42 lead with 7:50 to play.
After a media timeout, Andrews hit a three-pointer for SJU to tie the game at 45 all at 6:14.
The Rams (22-7, 11-5 A-10) countered with seven straight points to open a 52-45 lead with under four minutes to play.
Fordham would push its lead to 56-48, but a three-pointer from senior Erin Shields and layup by classmate Ilze Gotfrida brought SJU within a possession, 56-53, with 28 seconds to play.
Despite the frantic rally, the Hawks would get no closer as they hit a pair of free throws to close out the game.
