PHILADELPHIA – Leading 3-0 just six minutes into the game, the Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team fell to a 9-0 Campbell run en route to an eventual 11-7 loss to the Fighting Camels, on Sunday afternoon at Sweeney Field.
Saint Joseph's junior midfielder Julia Falcone scored the game's first goal just 29 seconds in, and senior midfielder Michele Granger and sophomore defender Kelly Phelan added their own goals at the 25:17 mark and 24:41 mark to put the Hawks ahead, 3-0. Sophomore attack Emily Bowers assisted on the first two goals of the game.
From there, Campbell (4-3) scored seven unanswered goals in the remaining 23 minutes of the first half to take a 7-3 lead into halftime.
The Fighting Camels added two more within just 1:14 of the second half to extend their lead, 9-3, with 28:46 remaining in regulation.
Bowers then found Phelan for the sophomore's second tally of the game to close the deficit to five goals at the 23:23 mark, but Campbell would add another goal with 20:21 remaining in regulation to take a 10-4 lead heading into the final 20 minutes of play.
Saint Joseph's would respond as freshman attack Nora McCallion strung together a pair of goals within two minutes of one another to pull the Hawks to within four goals, 10-6, with just over 15 minutes to play.
Bowers also got in on the scoring action with a goal of her own at the 11:22 mark to close the deficit to three goals, 10-7, heading into the final 11 minutes.
From that point, neither team would score until the final two minutes of regulation when Campbell's Loren Day recorded her second goal of the day to secure the 11-7 win for the Fighting Camels.
Campbell held an edge in shots (29-26) and draw controls (13-7), securing seven of nine total draws in the second half. The Hawks caused 22 turnovers, including six failed clears, but were hit with 15 of their own, with seven coming from failed clear attempts. Saint Joseph's held Campbell to just 1-of-3 successful FPS, but the Hawks struggled from the eight-meter as they went scoreless in six FPS attempts.
Bowers posted a team-best four-point effort on one goal and three assists while Phelan (2G, 1A) and McCallion (2G) also recorded multi-goal games. McCallion also tallied a team-best four draw controls and added three ground balls.
On the defensive end, senior captains Brittany Hanrahan and Kaitlyn McSwiggan combined for eight of the team's 16 caused turnovers and seven of the team's 25 ground balls while sophomore Caroline Hagan added three ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Sophomore goalkeeper Genevieve Giblin (3-5) made 10 saves in a full-game effort and added a game-high five ground balls to go along with two caused turnovers.
Saint Joseph's returns to action this Wednesday, March 26 when the Hawks play host to Monmouth at 4:00 p.m. on Sweeney Field.
GAME NOTES: Sophomore attack Emily Bowers tallied three assists to tie for seventh with Jenna Martino '09 and Shannon Feite '96 on SJU's all-time list of single-season assists (19)... Bowers has now registered at least one point in 13 consecutive games dating back to April 7 of last season... Senior attacks Abby Ananian and Val Paolucci were unavailable for today's game due to injury... Freshman midfielder Becky Daub made her first collegiate start.
