MERION STATION, Pa. - The Saint Joseph's women's tennis team dropped its match to city-rival Drexel, 5-2, Tuesday afternoon at the SJU Tennis Facility.
Opening with doubles, the Hawks and Dragons battled back and forth, but unfortunately for SJU, Drexel would earn the first point with wins at all three flights.
In singles play, junior Aurora Davis got the Hawks on the board with a 6-2, 6-4 victory at the top flight over Zeynep Mafa. Classmate Kelly Mulquin collected Saint Joseph's second point with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Erin Bowsher at the fourth flight.
The Hawks' Claire Minnoe and Arianne Polatnick went to three sets in their matches at the fifth and sixth flights, but the Dragons would come out ahead in both contests to close out the match.
"The team played hard, but the ladies were struggling in most positions," said head coach Ian Crookenden. "Drexel is a deep, strong team and though Aurora and Kelly are playing tough, we could not quite pull out a singles point anywhere else. We will continue to work and and think positive."
Saint Joseph's (8-6) returns to action Friday at Massachusetts.
