DAYTON, Ohio - The Saint Joseph's softball team split its doubleheader at Dayton on Sunday. After falling 5-2 in the opener, the Hawks went on to take the second game, 3-2, to move to 14-15 overall and 4-4 in the Atlantic 10.
Looking to go 1-1 on the day after falling in game one, Saint Joseph's jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first as sophomore Brandi Harkness slugged a two-run home run that scored Madeline Brunck.
The Flyers (17-27, 3-7 A-10) would rally to make it a 2-1 game in the bottom of the third, but the Hawks answered with a run in the top of the fourth as Sarah Yoos scored on a RBI single by Ashley Alden.
Dayton would get another run off SJU freshman starter Niki Carillo, but classmate Emily Rogers shut the door for the remainder of the fourth. Sophomore Anna Lauterbach held the Flyers over the final three innings to preserve the win for SJU and pick up her second save of the year.
In the first game, Dayton jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, scoring against SJU starter Liz Mendez.
Saint Joseph's would answer back though to give Mendez a 2-1 lead. Morgan Earling scored on a RBI ground out by Brunck in the top of the third, while Hannah Dionne homered in the top of the fifth to give the visitors the lead.
Unfortunately for SJU, Dayton struck for three runs in the fifth and added another in the sixth to make up the final outcome, 5-2.
Saint Joseph's returns to action Tuesday when it hosts Lafayette.
