Women's Lacrosse Drops 10-8 Heartbreaker to Duquesne

PHILADELPHIA – The Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team battled for the entire 60 minutes, but the Hawks fell to Duquesne, 10-8, in Atlantic 10 action on Sunday afternoon at Sweeney Field. Saint Joseph's now stands at 4-9 overall and 1-3 in conference play.

Tied 3-3 less than 10 minutes into the first half, Duquesne went on a 5-1 run to pull ahead, 8-4, with 3:48 remaining in the first.

Saint Joseph's freshman attack Nora McCallion scored a goal with 14 seconds remaining in the first half to close the deficit to three goals, 8-5, heading into the halftime break.

Junior midfielder Julia Falcone scored on a dish from McCallion just 2:28 into the second half to bring the Hawks to within two goals, 8-6, but Duquesne would register back-to-back goals as the Dukes owned a 10-6 lead heading into the final 10 minutes of regulation.

The Hawks would continue to strike as McCallion and sophomore midfielder Kelly Phelan netted goals at the 9:40 mark and 7:32 mark, respectively, but the Dukes would hold the Hawks from that point as the 10-8 score would stand as time expired.

Duquesne (12-2, 3-1 Atlantic 10) jumped out to a 3-0 lead over the first 4:52 of regulation, but the Hawks would string together a trio of goals to even the score, 3-3, at the 20:07 mark of the first.

For the game, Duquesne owned a slight 23-20 advantage in shots and 13-11 edge in ground balls. The Hawks and Dukes earned 10 draw controls each. The Hawks were hit with a pair of yellow cards at separate times early in the first, and Duquesne scored on both situations.

McCallion boasted three goals and two assists to lead five Hawks in scoring. Phelan was good for two goals and two assists while Falcone, junior midfielder Hannah Hutchins and sophomore midfielder Courtney Emanuele netted one goal apiece.

Rookie defender Maggie Egan was solid on the back line, boasting a team-best two ground balls and three caused turnovers in substantial minutes off the bench.

Sophomore goalkeeper Genevieve Giblin (4-9, 1-3 Atlantic 10) made eight saves in a full-game effort.

Duquesne's Amanda Kidder led the Dukes with three goals and three assists.

Prior to the start of the game, Saint Joseph's honored its six graduating seniors - Michele Granger, Brittany Hanrahan, Allison Heath, Kaitlyn McSwiggan, Val Paolucci, and Meghan Watkin - and recognized senior Abby Ananian, who will return for a fifth season in 2015.

Saint Joseph's returns to action this Friday, April 18 at La Salle. Start time at McCarthy Stadium is scheduled for 10:00 a.m.
