Softball Drops Doubleheader At Rhode Island

KINGSTON, R.I. - The Saint Joseph's softball team dropped its doubleheader at Rhode Island on Saturday. The Hawks fell 2-1 in the opener and 6-3 in the finale.

In the opener, the host Rams took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth off a two-run single against SJU starter Liz Mendez.

Mendez would stagger URI from there, holding them hitless.

The Hawks would cut the Rams' lead to 2-1 in the top of the sixth as sophomore Sarah Yoos singled home Maria Ficca.

Saint Joseph's (11-13, 2-2 A-10) would get a single by senior Morgan Earling in the top of the seventh, but could not advance her as the Hawks fell 2-1.

In the nightcap, the Hawks fell behind 2-0 in the bottom of the first, but rallied to tie it in the top of the second. Sophomore Brandi Harkness doubled to lead off the inning and came in to score on a single by Ashley Alden. Alden would come in to tie it up on a sacrifice fly by Hannah Dionne.

Freshman Madeline Brunck put her team ahead 3-2 in the top of the third, scoring on a Rhode Island error by the short stop.

Unfortunately for the Hawks, Rhode Island would tally four runs in the bottom of the third.

For the game, Hannah Dionne was 2-for-2, while Brunck, Alden, Ficca, Earling and Harkness all picked up a single.

Saint Joseph's returns to action Wednesday when it hosts Rider.
