AMHERST, Mass. – The Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team fell to #11 Massachusetts, 18-2, in Atlantic 10 action at McGuirk Stadium on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Hawks drop to 3-8 overall and 0-2 in A-10 play.
UMass (11-1, 2-0 A-10) owned a 10-1 lead at the half. The Minutewomen owned a 19-5 advantage in shots and 10-5 edge in ground balls and owned nine of 12 draw controls in the first 30:00.
Sophomore midfielder Kelly Phelan tallied SJU's lone first-half goal on a free-position shot with 5:35 remaining in the first to make the score 7-1. Phelan also recorded a team-best two draw controls on the day.
The Minutewomen scored seven consecutive goals to start the second.
With just under four minutes to play in regulation, Saint Joseph's sophomore attack Emily Bowers found freshman attack Nora McCallion, who scored her ninth goal of the season.
UMass would add another goal with 28 seconds left to play to make the score 18-2, and that score would stand as time expired.
For the game, UMass outshot Saint Joseph's 31-8 and owned 16 of the game's 22 possessions from the draw. The Hawks were hurt on clears, converting just five of 15 opportunities.
Defensively, senior Allison Heath posted team-highs with four caused turnovers and three ground balls.
Sophomore goalkeeper Genevieve Giblin (3-8, 0-2 A-10) made 10 saves in a full-game effort.
Saint Joseph's returns home this Friday, April 11 to face St. Bonaventure in Atlantic 10 action. Start time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. on Sweeney Field.
