Box Score PHILADELPHIA – Senior forward Mike Glazer's goal in the 14th minute proved to be the match-winner as the Saint Joseph's men's soccer team defeated St. Francis (N.Y.), 1-0, in the season opener for both teams on Sweeney Field on Friday evening.
The play unfolded as Saint Joseph's (1-0) was set up with a corner kick opportunity. Junior midfielder Tim Lazorko fired a pass into the penalty area, and Glazer connected on the volley to tuck the ball into the back of the net.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jay Higbee (1-0) made five saves in his first collegiate start in goal. The netminder also made two phenomenal defensive stops in the final 11 minutes as he came out to grab a cross off of a St. Francis corner kick at the 10:42 mark and held onto the ball on a foul call with 8:42 to play.
The defensive unit was extremely solid with the back line of seniors Tommy Brooks, Jake Nelson, and Brandon Stevis and sophomore Coupar Lipp, who played a strong 90 minutes in just his second collegiate start to help lead the Hawks to the clean sheet.
Freshmen Mike Akinkoye and Ben Zambetti made their collegiate debuts. Akinkoye subbed into the match in the 40th minute of play while Zambetti entered the match in the 63rd minute.
For the game, St. Francis held a 20-9 advantage in shots and 10-4 edge in corner kicks. SJU was whistled for 18 of the match's 29 fouls. Lazorko led all Hawks with four shots.
St. Francis (0-1) was led by Andy Cormack, John Makaya, and Federico Curbelo, who all took three shots and landed one on goal apiece. Terriers goalkeeper Jack Binks (0-1) made three saves in the loss.
The Hawks return to action this Monday, September 1 against Army. Start time on Sweeney Field is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
