Box Score PHILADELPHIA – Penn's Alec Neumann scored the match-winner in the 103rd minute as the Saint Joseph's men's soccer team fell to the Quakers, 2-1, in a double-overtime Philadelphia Soccer Six match-up at Rhodes Field on Tuesday evening. The Hawks conclude the non-conference portion of their schedule with a 5-2-3 record to post the program's best non-conference winning percentage (.650) since 2001.
Neumann headed in the golden goal on a cross from Luka Martinovic as Penn (4-4-0) clinched the Philadelphia Soccer Six title.
Tied one goal apiece, neither team had scored since the 49th minute of play, but both squad's put forth solid offensive pressure in the final 23 minutes of the match.
After Saint Joseph's defensive unit blocked a Neumann attempt on goal in the 80th minute, SJU sophomore midfielder Eric Jordan fired a curling shot on goal. However, Penn goalkeeper Max Polkinhorne took one step for the save to keep the score level, 1-1.
In the 87th minute and following a Penn foul just over midfield, senior forward Jake Nelson's header sailed just wide, and junior forward Mark Colville went on to fire a shot just high with 31 seconds remaining in regulation. Colville took another solid shot in the 101st minute, but Polkinhorne made the save.
Trailing 1-0 coming out of the half-time break, Saint Joseph's came out of the locker room firing as junior forward Emmanuel Temeh netted a half-bicycle kick goal from the left post in the 49th minute. A cross from junior midfielder Tim Lazorko set up the equalizer as he and sophomore midfielder Bliss Harris, who found Lazorko on the pass, earned assists on the play.
Penn scored the first goal of the match in the 27th minute. Freshman goalkeeper Bobby Edwards made a phenomenal stop on Neumann, but the ball came back into play. Duke Lacroix then tapped in the Neumann rebound to put the Quakers up, 1-0.
Saint Joseph's best look of the first half came from freshman midfielder Ben Zambetti, who launched a shot from 30 yards out that just went wide of the net in the 35th minute.
Penn owned a 14-12 edge in shots, although the Hawks held a 9-6 advantage after the first half of play. The Quakers earned seven of the match's 10 corner kicks. The Hawks were whistled for 19 fouls and two offsides calls on the evening.
Colville led all Hawks a team-best four shots and team-best two shots on goal, while senior forward Mike Glazer and Nelson added two shots apiece.
Edwards (3-1-3) made two saves in a full-game effort.
Saint Joseph's opens Atlantic 10 Conference action this Saturday, October 4 at Massachusetts. Kickoff at Rudd Stadium in Amherst, Mass. is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
