BALTIMORE - For the second straight game the Saint Joseph's women's soccer team posted a stellar defensive effort as the Hawks downed Loyola (Md.), 1-0, Sunday afternoon at the Ridley Athletic Complex. Saint Joseph's got a first half goal from sophomore midfielder Emily Gingrich and junior Allison Ebling made one save to post her second straight shutout as it improved to 3-3-0 overall.
In a defensive matchup that saw just four shots on goal, Gingrich would deliver the decisive one more than midway through the first half. Sophomore forward Shannon Mulvey crossed a pass to Gingrich, where the SJU team leader in goals did the rest. Taking control of the pass, Gingrich beat her defender and delivered a shot that found the back of the next at 36:04.
Loyola (2-4-0), which outshot the Hawks 4-3 in the first half, collected just three shots in the second half, with Ebling saving the lone one on net to preserve the shutout victory.
For the game, SJU finished with an 11-7 edge in shots and 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The Hawks return to action on Friday when they host Lehigh at 7 p.m.
