Box Score The University of the Sciences women's basketball team placed five players in double figures, extending their winning streak to eight games as they defeated crosstown rival Philadelphia University 86-52 Saturday afternoon at the Bobby Morgan Arena.
The Devils improve to 10-4 overall and maintain first place in the Central Atlantic collegiate conference south division with a 7-1 conference record. The Rams fall to 11-2 overall and 5-2 in league play. The Devils win also snaps Philadelphia's seven game win streak.
Brianne Traub (Eastern Christian HS/Wayne, N.J.) led all players with 20 points (8-12 FG, 4-5 3FG). The senior guard also had seven rebounds, four assists and four steals. Laura Trisch (Archbishop Wood HS/Doylestown, Pa.) recorded a career high 17 points (5-8 3FG) and Isabella Ross (Central HS/Philadelphia, Pa.) recorded her first double-double of the season with 11 points and 14 rebounds. Ross also had five assists. (no turnovers). Jessica Sylvester (Nazareth Academy/Trevose, Pa.) and Colleen Walsh (Shipley School/Downingtown, Pa.) rounded out the quintet of players in double figures with 14 and 10 points respectively. Kaitlyn Schmid (Howell HS/Howell, N.J.) had five assists (against zero turnovers).
Sylvester had a traditional three-point play to start the scoring as the Devils scored the first five points leading to a 12-2 margin in the first four minutes. PU's Monica Schacker (11 points) brought the Rams back within four 14-10 before the Devils took control of the game with a 21-5 outburst to lead by 20, 35-15 with 5:42 left in the half. The Devils built their first half lead to 28 before settling in for a 48-24 lead at the break.
The Devils opened the second half with a 23-9 run to take their biggest lead of the game, 71-33 with 11:09 left. The lead never fell below 32 points the rest of the way with a PU basket by Kelsey Jones providing that margin with 2:00 left. The Devils closed it out with baskets from Amber Reiley (High Point Regional/Branchville, N.J.) and Kelly Otchet (St. Peter's HS for Girls/Staten Island, N.Y.) before one final Ram bucket made the final score 86-52.
Schacker, Najah Jacobs and Bria Young each had 11 points to lead the Rams.
Sciences finished the game shooting exactly 50% from the field (30-60) and 50% from three-point territory (13-26). The Rams shot 32.7% (17-52) from the field and 42.9% (6-14) from three point range. Sciences had the advantage rebounding (42-29) and made the most of their offensive boards holding a 19-6 advantage in second chance points. The Rams also committed three more turnovers (16-13) leading to a 24-11 Devils advantage in the points off turnovers category. Sciences also dished out a season best 26 assists. (PU- 8).
The Devils return to action on Tuesday, January 13, 2015 when they face Holy Family University in northeast Philadelphia.
Noteworthy: Traub became just the seventh player in program history to make 100 three-point field goals with her four three-point baskets today…she has 101 for her career and also surpassed the 1,800 career point plateau today…Amongst current NCAA Division II players Traub has the second highest career point total…Schmid leads the CACC and is ranked fifth nationally in assist/turnover ratio.(3.6)
