Women's Basketball Battles Until the End in Program's Final Game

Box Score

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The University of the Sciences women's basketball program did not go down without a fight in its final game as a program.

Trailing for the entirety of the content with the exception of one tie, including by a game-high 13 midway through the third quarter, the Devils had multiple opportunities to tie the game in the final minute.

USciences could unfortunately not do so though, as the Devils lost 65-60 to Pace in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament at Southern New Hampshire on Saturday evening.

Trailing 61-56 with 1:13 remaining, Isla Brennan stole an inbounds pass and made two free throws after she was fouled on a layup attempt.

The USciences press then forced three more turnovers but the Devils could not take advantage with four missed shots, before a turnover of their own led to Pace making 1-of-2 free throws.

Down by four with 22 seconds remaining, University of the Sciences turned the ball over once again.

The Setters again made 1-of-2 foul shots and by the time Jess Huber made a jumper with two seconds left, it was too late.

Free throw shooting proved to be the difference as both teams made 23 field goals, with USciences making three more 3-poitners (9-6), but Pace made more foul shots than the Devils attempted (13-10).

The Setters also outscored University of the Sciences 17-4 in points off turnovers, despite both teams turning the ball over 10 times.

Huber led all players with 20 points including making 4-of-9 3-pointers to finish the year with 71, fourth in the program's single-season history.

Brennan was the only other Devil in double-figures with 12 points off the bench, with Kendall Keyes adding nine.

Taylor Hamm had nearly double the amount of rebounds as any other player with 15, the second-highest total of her career, and she also led all players with a career-best seven assists, to go along with seven points.

Pace (23-7) beat the first quarter buzzer to go ahead 19-10 before establishing a first-half-high 11-point advantage, 21-10, 1:02 into the second period.

University of the Sciences (24-5) chipped away to within three twice late in the first half, as two Huber baskets in the span of 37 seconds made the score 30-27 1:29 ahead of the break.

The Setters would respond with a 3-pointer though, taking a 33-27 lead into the locker room.

Five straight points completed an 11-3 run that established the game's largest advantage, 46-33, with 5:22 remaining in the third quarter.

Still trailing by double-digits just over two minutes later, a Kerry Patterson 3-pointer sparked seven unanswered that included layups by Dayna Balasa and Juliana Gura, but Pace ended the period with a free throw to make the score 50-45 entering the fourth.

Huber opened the final period with a 3-pointer, sandwiched between back-to-back defensive stops, the second of which gave USciences an opportunity to take its first lead of the evening.

The Devils could never do so though, only getting as close as one, 54-53, when Keyes drained a triple with 7:16 to play.

The Setters responded with back-to-back baskets to start a 7-2 spurt, re-establishing a six-point advantage, 61-55, with two and half minutes to go before Hamm made 1-of-2 at the line to make the score 61-56 with an even two minutes remaining.
