Women's Lacrosse Falls in Overtime Heartbreaker, 12-11

PHILADELPHIA - Saint Joseph's sophomore defender Maggie Egan's third goal of the game with 4:56 remaining in regulation forced overtime at 9-9, but the Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team (0-1) ultimately fell to Temple, 12-11, in its season opener on Sweeney Field on Saturday afternoon.

In the extra frame and playing with an extra player due to a Temple yellowcard, freshman attack Kristen Kelbon scored her first collegiate goal on an assist from junior midfielder Kelly Phelan just 62 seconds in to put the Hawks ahead, 10-9.

Just 43 seconds later, Phelan followed with an EMO goal of her own to give the Hawks an 11-9 edge heading into the final 4:15 of the six-minute overtime.

However, Temple (2-0) answered with three straight goals, including the game-winner by Carly Demato with 1:49 to play, to come away with the 12-11 overtime victory.

The Hawks had battled back from a four-goal deficit to reach the overtime frame. Trailing 9-5 with 11:39 remaining in the second half, Egan netted her second goal of the game with 11:08 left to play, followed by Phelan (10:24) and sophomore midfielder Sarah Smith (9:38). Egan then netted her equalizer with 4:56 to play in the second half to send the game to overtime.

Phelan and sophomore midfielder Katelyn Ambrose scored the first two goals of the game to put the Hawks ahead, 2-0, just 2:17 in. However, Temple went on a 9-3 run that put SJU in a four-goal deficit, 9-5, with 11:39 remaining in the second.

For the game, Temple owned a 30-22 advantage in shots and 16-11 edge in draw controls while Saint Joseph's held a slight 19-17 edge in ground balls. The Hawks were 14-of-17 in clear attempts and held Temple to 1-of-7 in FPS.

Phelan (3G, 1A) and Egan (3G) led the way for SJU while Smith (1G, 1A), Ambrose (1G), McCallion (1G), Kelbon (1G), and senior midfielder Julia Falcone (1G) added goals.

Defensively, junior Caroline Hagan scooped up a team-high three ground balls while Smith, junior defender Mallory Grey, and Egan added two caused turnovers apiece.

In her first career start, senior goalkeeper Nora McGeever made a career-high 12 saves - six in each half - in a career-high 66 minutes.

Saint Joseph's returns to action this Wednesday, February 18 against American. Start time on Sweeney Field is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
