Men's Lacrosse Drops Overtime Heartbreaker to #14 Penn, 11-10

PHILADELPHIA – Penn's Nick Doktor scored with 51 seconds remaining in overtime as the Saint Joseph's men's lacrosse team (1-2) dropped an overtime heartbreaker to #14 Penn (2-0) by a final score of 11-10 on Tuesday evening on Sweeney Field.

Saint Joseph's earned the first possession of the overtime frame as sophomore midfielder Danny Manning won the face-off and senior defenseman Will Farrell battled successfully for the ground ball. Redshirt junior transfer Kevin Forster fired off a shot on net, but Penn's John Lopes made the save as the ball bounced back into play.

Junior attack Pat Swanick fought for the ground ball and earned it to maintain possession for the Crimson and Gray. Seven seconds later, graduate student attack Ryan McGee rocketed a shot that was once again saved by Lopes.

"We had two great takes in overtime," said head coach Taylor Wray. "Their goalie made two saves. It's disappointing, but I give them credit for rallying and battling back . . . They did a great job in the second half. We needed to play better."

The Hawks earned possession again, but the Quakers caused SJU to turn the ball over and were able to successfully clear the ball into their offensive third with 2:07 remaining in the overtime frame.

Coming out of a timeout, Penn took 1:16 off the clock before Doktor scored on a dish from Kevin Brown to lift the Quakers to the 11-10 win.

Saint Joseph's jumped out to a dominating 7-0 lead to start the game on a run that spanned the entire first period and just under four minutes into the second. Sophomore attack Mike Rastivo kicked off the scoring just 2:48 into the game before sophomore attack Chris Blewitt (6:54) and Forster (3:46) added a pair of goals to put the Hawks ahead, 3-0.

Blewitt, who finished the game with his first collegiate hat trick, then scored twice more with five seconds remaining in the first period and just 12 seconds into the second period as the Hawks jumped ahead, 5-0. Sophomore midfielder Ray Vandegrift and Swanick, assisted by Forster, then added tallies of their own to give the Hawks the commanding 7-0 lead with 11:34 to play in the second quarter.

Penn owned the scoring over the next five minutes as Isaac Bock got the Quakers on the scoreboard with 10:24 to play in the half and Joe McCallion added a pair of unassisted tallies (7:21, 6:25) to close the visiting team's deficit to four goals.

McGee added his own goal with 2:26 remaining in the first half to put the Hawks back up five, 8-3, heading into the halftime break.

Each team scored once in the third period, with Penn's Reilly Hupfeldt netting his first of the game just 5:21 into the third and Saint Joseph's senior attack Kyle Bruun retaliating to maintain SJU's five-goal lead heading into the fourth period.

Penn came alive in the final frame as a failed SJU clear attempt picked off by Connor Keating started a six-goal run over the course of 9:51, allowing the Quakers to jump ahead, 10-9, for their first lead with 5:09 to play.

Forster netted his second unassisted goal of the evening with 3:45 remaining in regulation to equalize the score, 10-10, and to force the game into overtime.

For the game, the Hawks held a 32-30 edge in shots, including a 25-16 advantage in the first half; McGee (9) and Foster teamed up for 13 of those shots. Penn, however, would outshoot Saint Joseph's 13-5 in the third and fourth periods combined.

The Hawks also owned a 35-31 edge in ground balls, led by sophomore midfielder Anthony Joaquim (6), Swanick (5), and Farrell (4) and earned 14 of the game's 25 face-off wins as sophomore midfielders Mike Lanham (10-of-19) and Manning (4-of-6) teamed up at the X.

Sophomore goalkeeper T.J. Jones made six saves in the first 56:15 before freshman Pat Dallon (0-1) came in for the final 6:54 in his collegiate debut.

Saint Joseph's returns to action at VMI this Saturday, February 21. Start time at Foster Stadium in Lexington, Va. is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
