TAMPA, Fla. - The Saint Joseph's softball team had its nine game win streak snapped Saturday at the Michelle Smith Spring Break Invitational. Playing at the University of South Floida, the Hawks fell 5-1 to Iowa State in Saturday's first game, before dropping a 6-2 decision versus Purdue in the late afternoon.
The Hawks (12-6) fell behind Iowa State early in game one as the Cyclones scored twice in the first and added a run in the third against SJU starter Madison Clarke to take a 3-0 edge.
Iowa State (14-9) would add a pair of runs in the fifth to open a 5-0 lead.
Saint Joseph's would rally for a run in the top of the seventh as Kerrie Kortmann singled home Melissa Ruf to make it 5-1. That would be all the Hawks' offense would get though as they saw their win streak ended.
For the game, Nikki Alden was 2-for-2 with Kortmann finishing 1-for-1 with an RBI. Clarke fell to 8-2 on the season as she allowed three runs, with just one being earned, over four innings. Junior Anna Lauterbach struck out one over two innings of works while giving up a pair of runs on four hits.
In the nightcap against Purdue, Saint Joseph's found itself in a similar situation as the Boilermakers jumped out to a 4-0 lead with two runs in both the first and third innings.
Ashley Alden brought the Hawks to within two, 4-2 in the top of the fourth with a two-run home run that also scored Yoos.
But that would be as close as SJU would get as Purdue kept the Hawks off the board from there and added a pair of late insurance runs.
Ashley Alden and Brandi Harkness accounted for the Hawks' two hits in the game, while Nikki Alden was on the losing side after allowing four runs on six hits over three innings. Lauterbach threw the final three innings in relief, allowing two runs, while striking out two.
The Hawks cap play in Florida on Sunday versus Green Bay.
