McGee's Six Goals Lead Men's Lacrosse Past Delaware, 14-6

NEWARK, Del. - Graduate student attack Ryan McGee notched seven points on six goals and an assist as the Saint Joseph's men's lacrosse team concluded its non-conference schedule with a 14-6 win over Delaware at Delaware Stadium on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Hawks improve to 4-5 while the Blue Hens fall to 4-6. Sophomore attack Mike Rastivo added five points on two goals and three assists.

Trailing 1-0 after Delaware's opening score at the 12:24 mark, the Hawks tore off on a 9-0 run that spanned 21:34 and would put the Crimson and Gray up, 9-1, with 3:10 to play in the first half.

McGee struck first on a dish from Rastivo to even the score, 1-1, at 9:54. The Hawks would then take advantage of a 30 second interference call on Delaware as senior attack Mike Dougherty scored an EMO goal on a feed from McGee just 58 seconds later. McGee tacked on his second goal on a dish from freshman attack Chris Blewitt with 4:55 to play in the first before senior midfielder Rob Watts found fellow senior midfielder Josh Cavanaugh for another score at 4:11. McGee's unassisted tally with nine ticks to go in the first would put the Hawks ahead, 5-1, after the first 15:00.

Rastivo netted his first of two second-period goals at the 8:19 mark, followed by redshirt junior midfielder Kevin Forster (4:28) and Rastivo's second on an assist from freshman midfielder Davis Stoner. McGee's fourth goal of the day would close SJU's nine-goal run with 3:10 to play in the second half.

The Blue Hens chipped back, scoring with 1:41 remaining in the second period to close Delaware's deficit to two goals, 9-2, heading into the halftime break.

Forster netted his 11th goal of the season on a dish from Rastivo to extend SJU's lead back out to eight, 10-2, just 1:33 into the third, but Delaware strung together its first consecutive pair of goals (2:12, 0:31) to close its deficit to six heading into the final 15:00.

The fourth period would see McGee and Blewitt alternate pairs of goals to give SJU it's biggest lead of the game at ten goals, 14-4, with just under four minutes to play in regulation.

Delaware would score the final two goals of the day as Jeff Heath tallied an unassisted score with 1:33 to play and Steve Delargy took advantage of a 1:00 penalty charged to Saint Joseph's, scoring an EMO goal with five ticks to play. However, that 14-6 score would stand as time expired.

For the game, Saint Joseph's owned a dominating 42-22 advantage in shots, including a 24-10 second half, while Delaware held a 32-29 edge in ground balls. The Hawks, who entered the game ranked second nationally in man-down defense, held the Blue Hens to just one EMO score in three opportunities.

Sophomore midfielder Mike Lanham was dominant from the X, winning 17-of-24 opportunities to match a team-high five ground balls. At one point, Lanham had posted nine face-off wins in a row, including the final three of the second period, all four of the third period, and the first two of the fourth period.

Defensively, senior Will Farrell matched Lanham's five ground balls while junior John Winchell (4CT) and senior Kevin Barrow combined for seven caused turnovers.

Sophomore goalkeeper T.J. Jones (2-3) appeared in the final 43:23, allowing five goals and making one save in the win. Senior goalkeeper Dustin Keen got the starting nod, making three saves and allowing one score in the first 16:37.

Saint Joseph's opens Northeast Conference action next Saturday, March 28 at Bryant. Opening face-off at Bulldogs Stadium is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
