Box Score RICHMOND , Va. – Junior midfielder Kelly Phelan and sophomore midfielder Katelyn Ambrose scored two goals apiece, but the Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team ultimately fell to Richmond, 13-6, in Atlantic 10 action at Robins Stadium on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Hawks fall to 5-5 overall and 0-2 in the A-10 while Richmond improves to 5-6 overall and 2-0 in league play.
Trailing 4-0 with 5:56 to play in the first half, the Hawks were set up with an eight-meter following a Richmond foul, and freshman defender Aly Gormley buried her shot into the right side of the net from the center hash to put the Hawks on the scoreboard, 1-0.
Ambrose then scored her first of two goals with 1:25 to play to close SJU's deficit to two goals, 4-2.
However, Richmond scored with five ticks on the scoreboard to take a 5-2 lead into the halftime break.
Richmond tore off on 4-1 run that spanned the first 12:25 of the second half; Ambrose scored SJU's lone goal of that run on a free-position shot at the 24:20 mark.
With the Hawks' trailing 9-3 with just under 12 minutes to play, Phelan scored an unassisted goal at the 11:52 mark to pull SJU to within five goals, but the Spiders scored three consecutive goals (11:26, 11:03, 8:48) to pull out to an eight-goal lead, 12-4.
Saint Joseph's senior midfielder Julia Falcone scored on a dish from freshman defender Catie Vivian with 3:19 to play and Phelan scored her 20th goal of the season with 49 seconds remaining in regulation to pull the Hawks to within six, but Richmond's Emily Doyle scored Richmond's 13th goal of the day with eight seconds to play as that 13-6 score would stand as time expired.
For the game, Richmond owned a 32-20 advantage in shots and 14-7 advantage in draw controls while Saint Joseph's held a 19-18 edge in ground balls. The Hawks were just 3-of-9 in free-position opportunities and were 16-of-21 in clear attempts.
Five Hawks fired off three shots apiece while junior defender Caroline Hagan was dominant for the second consecutive game, scooping up a game-high four ground balls and causing two Richmond turnovers.
Senior goalkeeper Nora McGeever (5-5, 0-2 Atlantic 10) made 10 saves, including six in the first-half, in a full-game effort.
Saint Joseph's returns to action this Friday, April 3 against George Washington. Start time at the GW Lacrosse Field in Washington, D.C. is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
