Box Score OLEAN, N.Y. – Five consecutive goals over an eight and a half minute span put St. Bonaventure ahead to stay as the Bonnies topped the Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team, 15-10, at the Marra Athletic Complex on Sunday afternoon. Junior Kelly Phelan paced the Hawks with three goals on the day, while sophomore Maggie Egan tallied four points.
St. Bonaventure (2-12 overall, 1-4 Atlantic 10) took a one-goal lead into the locker room after a tight first half. The Bonnies opened the scoring just 51 seconds into the game on the first of LeighAnn Stauffer's game-high five goals.
Saint Joseph's (5-8 overall, 0-5 Atlantic 10) equalized through Phelan's first tally with 24:30 to go in the half, but SBU went ahead once again halfway through the period on a goal by Kaitlin Jennings.
Phelan and senior Julia Falcone netted goals just 24 seconds apart to give the Hawks their only lead of the day at 3-2 with 6:22 to go, but Erica Knaub leveled at the 5:15 mark and Stauffer sent the Bonnies into the break with a 4-3 lead on a goal with 14 seconds to play.
The Bonnies opened the second half with three straight goals, including two by Stauffer, to take a 7-3 lead with 26:43 to go in the game. Egan got one back for the Hawks just 21 seconds later, but Jennings and Mikayla Place answered in quick succession to up the edge to 9-4 with 23:14 remaining.
SJU clawed back within three as junior Bonnie McShane assisted on a goal by Falcone and then scored one of her own with 19:41 to go to cut the lead to 9-6. Knaub then converted a free position attempt 41 seconds later, but freshman Rena Carabases scored on an EMO to make it 10-7 with 18:25 to go. Two minutes later, Mary Maestri pushed the advantage back to four, but Phelan answered to leave the Hawks within three at 11-8 with 13:51 to go in the game.
Unfortunately for the Crimson and Gray, the Bonnies took control at that point, as Place tallied twice and Stauffer once in a stretch of two minutes and 21 seconds to increase the lead to 14-8. Egan and freshman Dana Garbinski scored for the Hawks, sandwiched around a goal from Jennings, to close out the scoring.
Senior goalkeeper Nora McGeever got the start for the Hawks, making six saves in the loss to fall to 5-8, while junior Genevieve Giblin saw action in the second half as well. Morgan Conroy went the distance between the pipes for St. Bonaventure, making 11 saves to improve to 2-12.
Saint Joseph's was strong on draw controls, pulling in 16, including 12 in the second half, to 11 for SBU. The Hawks also outshot the Bonnies on the afternoon, 35-27. Both teams turned the ball over 19 times while causing 15 turnovers apiece.
Junior defender Courtney Emanuele registered a career-high four ground balls and a career-high four caused turnovers.
The Hawks will close out the season at home, playing their final three Atlantic 10 games at Sweeney Field. Masscahusetts visits Hawk Hill on Friday, April 17, at 7:00 p.m., before SJU hosts Davidson at noon on April 19. Saint Joseph's will wrap things up on Friday night, April 24, with a 7:00 start against crosstown rival La Salle.
