Phelan Scores Four in Women's Lacrosse 13-10 Loss to Davidson

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA – Trailing 9-8 with 23:49 remaining in regulation, Davidson scored five consecutive goals to down the Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team, 13-10, in Atlantic 10 action on Saturday afternoon on Sweeney Field. With the loss, the Hawks fall to 5-10 overall and 0-7 in the A-10 while Davidson improves to 5-9 overall and 2-4 in league play. Junior midfielder Kelly Phelan netted four goals to lead the Hawks in scoring.

Tied 7-7 coming out of the halftime break, the Hawks pulled back ahead on Phelan's fourth goal of the day, assisted by junior attack Bonnie McShane, just 40 seconds in.

Davidson's Emily Rademacher answered (27:48) to knot the score at 8-8, but Saint Joseph's sophomore attack Nora McCallion netted her 16th goal of the season (23:49) on a dish from sophomore defender Maggie Egan to put the Hawks back ahead, 9-8, with just under 24 minutes to play.

From there, however, Davidson put together a 5-0 run on four unassisted scores and a successful eight-meter shot that spanned 17+ minutes to break away, 13-9, with just under five minutes remaining in regulation.

With under a minute to go, sophomore midfielder Megan Tracy's hustle on the defensive end of the field caused a Davidson turnover, and Egan took the ball all the way down the field to score with 49 ticks remaining on the scoreboard, but that 13-10 score would stand as time expired.

Each team took 24 shots and posted eight saves. The Hawks earned an 11-9 edge in ground balls while Davidson won 19 of the game's 25 draw controls. SJU also caused 12 Davidson turnovers – with four coming in the form of failed clear attempts – and turned the ball over just four times, a season-low for the Crimson and Gray. The Hawks were also a perfect 10-for-10 in clears.

In addition to scoring a goal and adding an assist, Egan scooped up a game-high four ground balls and caused two turnovers, while Tracy was good for a game-high three caused turnovers.

Senior goalkeeper Nora McGeever (5-10, 0-7 A-10) made eight saves in a full-game effort.

In a first half that saw five lead changes, Saint Joseph's and Davidson combined for 14 goals with seven apiece to take a 7-7 draw heading into the second half of play. Neither team led nor trailed by more than one goal in the first half.

The Hawks chipped back at an opening 3-1 Davidson run on a trio of scores from Phelan to even the score, 3-3, heading into the final 16:24 of the first half.

McShane would score the next two goals for the Crimson and Gray, the second of which put the Hawks ahead, 5-4, with 10:37 to go before the halftime break.

A pair of Davidson scores just 35 seconds apart (9:33, 8:58) would put the Wildcats up, 6-5, but senior midfielder Julia Falcone converted on her eight-meter attempt and junior defender Mallory Grey fired off SJU's go-ahead goal to put the Hawks back ahead, 7-6, with 2:55 to play in the first.

However, Davidson's Emma Sissman scored just 28 seconds later to equalize the score, 7-7, to end the first half.

Saint Joseph's will close out the 2015 season this Friday, April 24 against La Salle. Start time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. on Sweeney Field. A Senior Day ceremony for SJU's two senior Hawks will take place immediately following the conclusion of the game.
