MERION STATION, Pa. – Cal Jadacki was 3-for-5 and Brian Lau drove in four runs, but the Saint Joseph's baseball team ultimately fell to Bryant, 13-8, at Smithson Field on Friday.
Bryant (7-11) put runners on the corners with one out in the second, but SJU starter Pat Vanderslice induced a double play ball from Brandon Bingel to escape the inning.
Joe Paparelli would then lead off the third with a home run to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. An RBI groundout by A.J. Zarozny doubled the lead in the fourth.
Saint Joseph's (9-14) answered in the home half of the inning as Stefan Kancylarz tripled to center and came in to score on a double by Jadacki.
Robby Rinn's two-out home run in the sixth extended the lead to 3-1, but SJU answered again in the bottom of the frame. Jadacki led off with a double and advanced to third on a single by Taylor Boyd before Lau's sacrifice fly cut the deficit to 3-2. SJU would then load the bases and chase starter Kyle Wilcox from the game, but Logan Lessard escaped the jam with a ground ball to keep the Hawks at bay.
Bryant pulled away in the seventh, plating three runs on two hits and an error before breaking things open with a seven-spot in the eighth.
The Hawks then added six in the ninth to set the final score. Deon Stafford led off with a single and came in to score on a double by Matt Maul before Kancylarz hit his third home run of the season to cut the lead to 13-5. Charlie Coghlin would then single and Boyd would draw a two-out walk before Lau hit his first collegiate home run to close the gap to five. Unfortunately for the Crimson and Gray, Alex Lagos came on to retire the only batter he would face to end the ballgame.
Wilcox earned the win, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks in five and two-thirds innings to improve to 2-1. Vanderslice fell to 3-3, taking the loss after allowing three runs on eight hits while striking out four in five and two-thirds innings of his own.
Saint Joseph's returns to action on Tuesday, April 7, with a game at Lafayette.
