PHILADELPHIA – The top-seeded Saint Joseph's men's lacrosse team fell to Bryant, 10-6, in the 2015 Northeast Conference Championship final on Saturday afternoon on Sweeney Field. With the loss, the Hawks conclude the season 11-6 overall while Bryant (8-9) will advance to the NCAA Tournament.
For their efforts in the semifinals against Mount St. Mary's and the finals against Bryant, senior defenseman Kevin Barrow, senior long stick midfielder Will Farrell, and sophomore attack Mike Rastivo were selected to the 2015 Northeast Conference All-Tournament Team.
Saint Joseph's graduate student attack Ryan McGee scored three goals and added two assists to factor into all but one of SJU's scoring plays on the day.
Bryant scored the first four goals of the game to jump out to a 4-0 advantage with 13:00 to play in the second period.
The Hawks responded on redshirt junior midfielder Kevin Forster's 17th goal of the season on a dish from Rastivo at the 11:52 mark, but Bryant's Shane Morell scored his third of the game just 53 seconds later as Bryant maintained its four-goal lead, 5-1, with 10:59 to play in the first half.
McGee factored into SJU's next three scoring plays, a trio of consecutive scores that would bring the Hawks to within one, 5-4, at the conclusion of the first half. McGee converted on an EMO (7:59), assisted on sophomore attack Robert Raucci's EMO (4:34), and then scored on a dish from freshman attack Chris Blewitt (2:18).
However, Bryant scored four straight goals that spanned all of the third period and 1:04 into the fourth to jump out to a 9-4 lead entering the final 14:00 of regulation.
The Hawks netted goals from senior attack Mike Dougherty (9:48), assisted by McGee, and McGee (1:02), assisted by Rastivo, sandwhiched between a Bulldog goal from Tom Kennedy (2:28), but that 10-6 score would stand as time expired.
For the game, Saint Joseph's held a 36-30 advantage in shots while Bryant owned a 33-24 edge in ground balls. McGee and Rastivo each recorded a team-high four ground balls apiece while Bryant's Kevin Massa went 17-of-20 from the face-off.
Saint Joseph's sophomore goalkeeper T.J. Jones (9-4) made eight saves in a full-game effort.
Today's game marked the final collegiate appearances of SJU's 12 senior Hawks: Barrow, Kyle Bruun, Josh Cavanaugh, Dougherty, Farrell, Dustin Keen, McGee, Jack Moran, Dylan O'Donnell, Matt Sarcona, Guy Talarico, Rob Watts.
