Temeh, MacKinnon Lead Men's Soccer to 3-2 2OT Win Over LIU

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA – Senior forward Emmanuel Temeh and freshman forward Derek MacKinnon teamed up for SJU's equalizer (74') and overtime match-winner (103') to lead the Saint Joseph's men's soccer team to a 3-2 double-overtime victory over LIU Brooklyn on Sunday evening on Sweeney Field. With their first win of the season, the Hawks are now 1-4 overall.

With the Hawks trailing 2-1 in the 74th minute, MacKinnon raced up the right wing and sent a cross in to Temeh; Temeh fired in his first goal of the match to even the score, 2-2.

After a scoreless first overtime frame, the Hawks re-executed the same play perfectly, as MacKinnon blasted a cross from the right wing that once again found Temeh for the double-overtime match-winner.

For the match, Saint Joseph's owned a 17-13 edge in shots, including a 5-1 advantage in the two combined overtime periods. The Hawks also owned a 4-2 edge in corner kicks. Temeh and MacKinnon led the Hawks with three shots apiece.

Sophomore goalkeeper Bobby Edwards made five saves in a full 102:13 to earn his first win of the season. Edwards' final two saves were crucial as the netminder made a pair of game-saving stops (77', 90') to force the match into overtime.

LIU's Rasmus Hansen got the Blackbirds on the scoreboard in the 19th minute on a dish from Simen Hestnes, beating Edwards to his right for the first score of the game.

The Hawks would respond in the 35th minute as freshman forward Heriberto Sevilla sent a cross in from the right wing. In his season debut, junior defender Mike Stuski headed Sevilla's pass to the right of LIU goalkeeper Cole Palmer to even the scoring, 1-1.

Coming out of a 1-1 first half, LIU Brooklyn (2-4) took the lead on Hansen's second score of the match, a shot into the right upper-90 on a free kick from right outside the box.

Alongside Edwards, defenders Bliss Harris, Kevin Lockhart, and Eddie McCusker and midfielder Sam Irvin played full matches in the win.

Saint Joseph's opens a trio of road matches at St. Francis Brooklyn (3-0-2) this Wednesday, September 16. Start time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Brooklyn Bridge Park-Pier 5 in Brooklyn, N.Y.
