Temeh Nets Double-Overtime Winner in 3-2 Win over Howard

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA – Senior forward Emmanuel Temeh took a through ball from sophomore midfielder Mike Akinkoye and blasted his team-best fourth goal of the season (108') to lead the Saint Joseph's men's soccer squad to a 3-2 double-overtime victory over Howard on Friday evening. With the win, the Hawks improve to 2-6-1 overall and 2-1 at home while the Bison fall to 0-8-1.

After 17 minutes of scoreless overtime action, the Hawks gained momentum into their offensive third as Akinkoye served a beautiful pass up to a racing Temeh. From the right side, Temeh put away his second double-overtime match-winner in as many home matches to lead the Hawks to victory.

“I knew that Mike was going to get the ball, and I knew he was looking to find me to slip it through," said Temeh of the final play. "We both read the play right, and he slipped me a great ball, and I was just there to finish it.”

The end of regulation saw two goals scored in the final 2:03.

Howard's Austin Williams netted the Bison's second goal of the match, assisted by Omar Lewis, to put Howard up, 2-1, in the 88th minute.

The Hawks would persevere, however, as Temeh sent in a cross that bounced around the defense and finally found sophomore midfielder Matt Crawford. Crawford sent the equalizer into the back of the net with just 19 seconds remaining in regulation to send the match to overtime.

The first pair of goals occured in the first 16:27 as junior midfielder Sam Irvin converted a penalty kick in the ninth minute of play and Howard's Victor Guirma put one away on a dish from Isaac Mbappe in the 17th minute.

Temeh drew the foul that set up Irvin's PK, and therefore contributed to all three scoring plays on the evening.

Although scoreless, the remainder of the first half and nearly all of the second half continued with agressive play between the two squads in a physical match-up that saw 30 total fouls and five cautions.

For the match, the Hawks held a 16-13 edge in shots, with each team landing five shots on goal apiece.

Junior goalkeeper Jay Higbee (1-3-0) made three saves - all in the first half - in the full 107:35 to earn his first win of the season.

Irvin, junior midfielder Bliss Harris, junior defender Mike Stuski, and freshman defender Eddie McCusker added full-match efforts for the Hawks.
