AMHERST, Mass. - The Saint Joseph's women's basketball team held off a late charge by Massachusetts to earn a 62-58 victory at the Mullins Center on Wednesday evening.
Up 58-50 with under four minutes to play, the Hawks (7-7, 1-1 Atlantic 10) slowly saw their lead cut to just two as the Minutewomen used an 8-2 run to make it 60-58 on a three-pointer by Alyx Stiff with 43 seconds to play.
After getting a stop, Massachusetts (6-8, 0-2 A-10) had a chance to tie the game, but a missed pass bounced into the hands of SJU's Chelsea Woods, giving the ball back to the Hawks.
Following a pair of Minutewomen fouls, SJU senior guard Ciara Andrews sealed the win from the foul line as she knocked down a pair of free throws with 5.4 seconds to play.
Falling behind by as many as nine in the first quarter, the Hawks battled back in the second quarter to regain the lead on a jumper by Sarah Fairbanks at 5:50.
The Hawks went on to outscore the Minutewomen 20-10 in the second period to take a 37-33 edge into halftime.
Massachusetts would regain the lead early in the fourth quarter, but the Hawks pushed back to take a 58-50 edge before the final few minutes.
For the game, Andrews and Adashia Franklyn finished with 12 points apiece, while SJU finished the game shooting just 38.7 percent (24-of-62), but went 5-of-11 from three-point range and knocked down 9-of-14 from the foul line.
At the other end, Massachusetts shot 37.3 percent (22-of-59) as Bria Stallworth led the way with a team-best 12 points.
Saint Joseph's returns to action this Sunday at VCU at 1 p.m.
