PITTSBURGH - The Saint Joseph's women's basketball team fell to #24 Duquesne, 73-59, on Saturday afternoon at the A.J. Palumbo Center.
The Hawks (11-13, 5-7 Atlantic 10) got a team-best 13 points from senior Ciara Andrews, but couldn't overcome Duquesne's late surge.
In a tight game, Saint Joseph's found itself within five of the Dukes late in the third quarter as a three-point play by Andrews drew her team within 54-49.
Sparked by a three-point play by April Robinson to end the third period, Duquesne (23-2, 11-1 A-10) went on an 11-0 run that spanned the final two quarters as a layup by Emilie Gronas gave the host Dukes a 65-49 lead with 6:58 to play.
Saint Joseph's, which went 0-for-7 from the field to start the fourth quarter, finished strong, scoring eight points in the final three minutes, but it wasn't enough to overcome Duquesne's advantage.
For the game, the Hawks went 20-of-51 from the field (39.2 percent), 4-of-13 from three-point range (30.8 percent) and hit 15-of-19 free throws (78.9 percent).
Andrews added six rebounds and an assist to go with her 13 points, while sophomore Chelsea Woods finished with 11 points. Senior Sarah Fairbanks was the third Hawk in double figures, finishing with 10 points, while sophomore Adashia Franklyn grabbed a game-high nine rebounds to go with four points.
Robinson and teammate Kadri-Ann Lass both finished with 16 points to lead Duquesne, as the Dukes finished the game shooting 45 percent from the field (27-of-60), 35 percent from three-point range (7-of-20) and 54.5 percent from the foul line (12-of-22).
Saint Joseph's returns to action on Wednesday at La Salle. Game time is set for noon and is the final Big 5 game of the season for both teams.
