Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. – American used a 7-2 scoring run to open the second half as the Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team (0-1) dropped its season opener to American, 15-12, at William I Jacobs Field on Saturday afternoon. Junior attacker Nora McCallion scored a single-game career high seven goals for the Crimson and Gray.
Tied 6-6 coming out of the halftime break, American (1-2) scored four of the game's next five goals to jump ahead, 10-7, with 17:02 to play.
Saint Joseph's redshirt freshman attacker Morgan Lamey scored on an assist from junior midfielder Maggie Egan to close the gap, 10-8, with 16:33 to play, but American scored three straight to own a 13-8 lead head into the final 12:47.
McCallion scored her sixth goal of the game at the 12:02 mark to pull the Hawks to within four, but American's Sam Breeze answered to put the Eagles back up by five, 14-9, with 9:07 to play.
Junior attacker Sarah Smith tucked away a free position goal with 8:39 to once again bring SJU to within four goals, but American answered with 3:10 remaining in regulation to extend its lead, 15-10.
McCallion (1:03) and Smith (:35) scored in the final minutes to bring the Hawks to within three scores, 15-12, but time would run out for the Crimson and Gray.
For the game, American held a 30-21 advantage in shots while Saint Joseph's earned edges in ground balls (14-13) an draw controls (15-14). The Hawks were a perfect 10-for-10 in clear attempts.
McCallion led all scorers with seven goals while Smith was good for three goals, an assist, and a team-high two ground balls. Lamey added SJU's other two goals.
Egan added a single-game career high six draw controls to go with two assists while senior midfielder Mallory Grey added a single-game career high two assists and sophomore midfielder Kate Payne added a single-game career-high three draw controls to go with two caused turnovers.
Senior goalkeeper Genevieve Giblin (0-1) made five saves in the full 60:00.
Lamey opened the game's scoring with her first collegiate goal on a free position shot just 1:40 into the game before American tore off on a four-goal run to jump ahead, 4-1, with 19:24 to play in the first.
The Hawks then went on a 5-2 run over the final 14:33 of the first half to tie the score, 6-6; McCallion scored all five of those goals.
Saint Joseph's will host Monmouth in the 2016 home opener this Wednesday, February 24. Start time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. on Sweeney Field.
GAME NOTES: Lamey, sophomore defender Catie Vivian, freshmen attacker Francesca Donato, and freshman midfielder Hayley Sabol all made their first collegiate starts, while Lamey, Donato, Sabol, freshman midfielders Ally Beck and Sinead Brierley and graduate student defender Ashley Alden also made their collegiate debuts.
