CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Saint Joseph's softball team capped play at the First Pitch Classic on Sunday as the Hawks fell to Stony Brook, 3-2.
Playing their fifth game in three days, the Hawks (1-4) got on the board first as rookie Amanda Kulp scored on a ball hit by Madeline Brunck that was misplayed by Stony Brook's second baseman.
The Seawolves (2-3) battled back to take the lead in the bottom of the fourth to take a 2-1 lead on a two-run single against SJU rookie pitcher Ashley Ventura.
Saint Joseph's answered in the top of the sixth to tie the game at 2-2 as Brandi Harkness doubled in Brunck.
Unfortunately for SJU, Stony Brook was able to strike for a run in the bottom of the sixth, while a late rally by the Hawks failed to plate the tying run in the seventh.
Ventura fell to 1-2 on the season after allowing three runs over five innings, while striking out five. Senior Anna Lauterbach worked a scoreless inning of relief.
At the plate, Taryn Grober collected a team-high two hits, going 2-for-3 from the plate.
The Hawks return to action this Friday versus Toledo at 4:30 p.m. in the first day of play at the JMU Dukes Invitational
