RICHMOND, Va. - Senior Ciara Andrews' jumper with 3.2 seconds to go lifted the Saint Joseph's women's basketball team over Richmond, 59-57, Saturday afternoon in the Hawks' regular season finale at the Robins Center.
With the win, the Hawks earned the seventh seed in next week's Atlantic 10 Championship as they finished with an 8-8 conference record and moved to 14-14 overall. Saint Joseph's opponent has yet to be determined, but the game time is set for a 4:30 p.m. tip at the Richmond Coliseum next Thursday, March 3.
Down 56-48 with under five minutes to go, the Hawks mounted a 9-1 run as a pair of free throws by Andrews tied the game at 57-57 with 49 seconds to play.
Behind a strong defensive stand, Saint Joseph's forced an off-balance shot by the Spiders that had the ball bounce out of bounds, giving the Hawks possession with 22 seconds to go.
Holding the ball until 10-second mark, Andrews drove the right side and hit a pull-up jumper with 3.2 second on the clock to give her team a 59-57 edge.
Following a Richmond timeout, the Hawks used a foul, but the delayed call was made on the shot instead of the floor, sending Janelle Hubbard to the line with a chance to tie the game with a second to go.
On her first attempt, the ball rattled in and out, forcing Hubbard to miss the second. On the second attempt, the ball was tipped away from the basket as the horn sounded, giving SJU the win.
After a close first half in which Richmond led 28-27 the first 20 minutes, Saint Joseph's started the third quarter strong, using an 8-4 run to open a 35-32 lead on a jumper by Kathleen Fitzpatrick midway through the period.
From there though the Spiders took control of the game. Behind a 17-2 run that spanned into the fourth quarter, the Spiders opened a 49-37 lead on a three-pointer by Alicia Hudalla.
Saint Joseph's slowly chopped away at Richmond's lead, leading to the thrilling finish.
For the game, Saint Joseph's shot 40.8 percent overall (20-of-49), 38.5 percent from three-point range (5-of-13) and 93.3 percent from the foul line (14-of-15).
Individually, Fitzpatrick posted a team-high 17 points, with junior Amanda Fioravanti posting an 11-point, 10-rebound double-double. Senior Sarah Fairbanks had a team-high five assists to go with 10 rebounds and four points, while Andrews finished with eight points.
At the other end, Hubbard had a game-high 23 points for Richmond (12-17, 5-11 A-10) as the Spiders finished 21-of-54 from the field (38.9 percent), hit 7-of-13 from behind the arc (53.8 percent), but was just 8-of-15 from the foul line (53.3 percent).
Game Notes: The Hawks are now 14-5 all-time versus Richmond and swept the season series, 2-0...Freshman Alyssa Monaghan had nine points and two assists...Redshirt freshman Sarah Veilleux finished with five points...Sophomore Adashia Franklyn finished with three points...Sophomore Chelsea Woods added two points and six rebounds.
