Box Score PHILADELPHIA – The Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team fell to San Diego State, 15-13, on Saturday afternoon on Sweeney Field. Junior attacker Sarah Smith and junior midfielder Maggie Egan scored three goals apiece for the Crimson and Gray.
"San Diego State came out and played us strong for 60 minutes," said head coach Alex Kahoe following the game. "I was proud of our team in terms of how we did on the draw. Offensively, we did well with Maggie and Sarah stepping up. We just need to be able to capitalize on more opportunities offensively."
Tied 9-9 at the 24:43 mark of the second half, the Aztecs scored five unanswered goals to jump ahead, 14-9, with 8:36 remaining in regulation.
The Hawks put together a trio of consecutive scores from Smith (7:00), junior attacker Nora McCallion (4:37), and Egan (2:59) to close to within two scores, but San Diego State's Natalie Peel scored the Aztec's 15th goal of the game to give the visitors a three-goal advantage, 15-12, heading into the final 1:47 of regulation.
Smith added her third goal of the game with 1:07 to play, but San Diego State would hold onto its two-goal lead as time expired.
For the game, Saint Joseph's owned a 30-24 edge in shots and 20-10 advantage in draw controls while San Diego State earned 16 of the game's 26 ground balls. Each team earned 14 clear attempts while the Aztecs were 4-of-8 in free-position opportunities; the Hawks put away their only eight-meter of the day.
Egan (3g, 2a) and Smith (3g, 1a) led the Hawks on the offensive end of the field while senior midfielder Mallory Grey (2g), McCallion (2g), and sophomore midfielder Aly Gormley (2g) added multi-goal performances. Grey also added a game-high three ground balls and team-high two caused turnovers while Egan was good for a game-high five draw controls.
Senior goalkeeper Genevieve Giblin (1-2) made six saves in the full 60:00.
Smith scored the first goal of the game, but San Diego State responded with three consecutive goals to jump ahead, 3-1, at the 24:46 mark.
The Hawks would then score two of the game's next three goals as McCallion and Grey tallied one each to pull to within one, 4-3, but the Aztecs used another three-goal run to once again extend their lead, 7-3.
SJU put together a trio of goals of its own from Egan, Grey, and Gormley to close to within one, 7-6, at the 8:47 mark, and San Diego State's Alexa Comfort netted a free-position goal with 15 ticks on the scoreboard to make it 8-6 in favor of the Aztecs heading into halftime.
SJU scored the first two goals of the second half from freshman midfielder Sinead Brierley (29:00) and Gormley (27:55) to even the score, 8-8, but Comfort netted another goal to put the Aztecs back ahead, 9-8.
Egan tied the scoring once again, 9-9, at the 24:43 mark before the Aztecs used their five-goal run to once more extend their lead.
Saint Joseph's returns to action next Saturday, March 5 at Wagner. Start time in Staten Island, N.Y. is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
