PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – Freshman righthander Tim Brennan allowed two hits over seven shutout innings as the Saint Joseph's baseball team concluded its Spring Break trip to Florida with a 5-2 win over Central Michigan on Sunday. Brennan walked one and struck out five to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Brennan did not allow a hit until the fifth inning, and CMU starter Patrick Leatherman was equal to the task, holding the Hawks to just two hits through five.
Saint Joseph's (6-6) broke through in the bottom of the sixth as Peter Sitaras led off with a double and came in to score two batters later on a sacrifice fly by Deon Stafford, Jr. The Hawks then doubled the lead in the seventh after Matt Maul walked and eventually scored on an error with two outs.
SJU tacked on three more in the eighth. Marc Giacalone led off the frame with a single before Stafford and Maul hit singles of their own to load the bases with one out. Charlie Concannon followed with a two-run single to double the margin to 4-0; two batters later, a Cal Jadacki sacrifice fly scored Maul to extend the lead to 5-0.
Central Michigan (3-12) pushed two across in the top of the ninth on a triple by Jarrod Watkins, but Brian Lau fanned Jason Sullivan to end the game.
The Hawks will open the home portion of their 2016 schedule on Friday when they host Sacred Heart. First pitch at Smithson Field is set for 3:00 p.m.
