DAYTON, Ohio - The Saint Joseph's softball team capped its three-game series at Dayton on Saturday, dropping the first game of a doubleheader, 1-0, in 11 innings before earning a tie, 1-1, in game two.
Saint Joseph's (11-10-1, 1-1-1 Atlantic 10) won Friday's series opener, 4-3, in 11 innings to draw a split of its first conference games on the year.
In a pitchers' duel for an opener, the Hawks' Madison Clarke and Anna Lauterbach kept the Flyers off the board for 10 innings, while SJU was held to a single by junior Madeline Brunck.
Unfortunately for Saint Joseph's, Dayton was able to score a run in the bottom of the 11th on a single with the bases loaded.
In game two, the Hawks jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the third on a RBI single by Brunck scored Cyndi Wilson.
Dayton rallied to tie the game up in the bottom of the fourth.
The game remained tied at 1-1 after seven, with the game being called a tie.
On the day, Brunck collected a pair of hits for SJU. In the circle, Clarke went six innings, allowing just six hits while striking out seven. Lauterbach was the hard-luck loser, allowing a run over 4.1 innings to fall to 2-3 on the year. In game two, rookie Ashley Ventura allowed one run, while scattering eight hits and striking out three.
The Hawks return to action on Wednesday with a single game versus Monmouth. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
