MERION STATION, Pa. - Monmouth rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh to top the Saint Joseph's softball team, 6-3, Wednesday afternoon at the SJU Softball Field.
Saint Joseph's (11-11-1) entered the top of the seventh ahead 3-2, but the visiting Hawks rallied with two outs and the bases loaded to retake the lead.
Monmouth (11-11) struck for four runs in the top half of the inning to open a 6-3 advantage, while the Hawks' Amanda Riley worked a perfect bottom half of the inning to preserve the win.
The visiting Hawks opened the scoring in the top of the first as Rachel Shotzbarger singled home Emma Hill to make it 1-0.
Nicole Wieczorek extended the Hawks' lead to 2-0 in the top of the fourth with an RBI double to right field with two outs off of SJU starter Madison Clarke.
Saint Joseph's rallied in the bottom of the fifth for three runs to take a 3-2 edge. Senior Hannah Dionne led off the inning with a double and came around to score on a single by Taryn Grober that Monmouth misplayed. Advancing to third on a single by Cyndi Wilson, Grober tied the game at 2-2 on a wild pitch, while Wilson moved to third on the play.
Following a strike out, rookie Amanda Kulp delivered an RBI double to left center, scoring Wilson to put the Hawks up 3-2.
SJU would keep that lead until the final inning.
Individually, Kulp, Dionne Grober and Wilson accounted for all four SJU hits. In the circle, Clarke struck out two and allowed one earned over four innings, while Ashley Ventura threw two scoreless innings and struck out two. Anna Lauterbach was the hard-luck loser, falling to 2-4 on the season after allowing four runs, while striking out two.
Saint Joseph's returns to action Saturday with a doubleheader versus Fordham. Game one is set for a noon start.
