Baseball Drops Series Opener at South Florida

TAMPA, Fla. – The Saint Joseph's baseball team saw its three-game winning streak come to an end on Friday night as the Hawks fell to South Florida, 13-3, at the USF Baseball Stadium.  Sophomores Marc Giacalone and Deon Stafford, Jr., each notched a pair of hits for the Hawks.

South Florida (5-4) took an early lead in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice fly by Luke Borders and a single by Coco Montes.

The Bulls tripled the margin with a four-spot in the third, taking advantage of four hits and a walk, to open up a 6-0 cushion.  USF expanded the lead to 8-0 an inning later on a two-run single by Luke Maglich before a Duke Stunkel RBI double in the fifth made it 9-0.

Saint Joseph's (3-2) got on the board in the sixth.  Giacalone started things off with a two-out single before four-pitch walks to Dominic Cuoci and Taylor Boyd loaded the bases for Peter Sitaras.  Sitaras then worked a walk of his own to bring in the first run of the game for SJU.

Unfortunately for the Hawks, the Bulls answered with two in the bottom half on a two-run home run by David Villar and added two more in the seventh on a two-run shot by Joe Genord.

The Hawks would scratch out two more runs in the eighth to close out the scoring.  Boyd led off with a single and moved up to second when Graham Leib reached on an error.  A groundout by Cal Jadacki put runners on second and third for Brian Lau; his groundout brought home Boyd to make it 13-2.  David Viselli followed with an RBI single to set the final margin.

Mark Savarese tossed an inning of shutout relief to earn the win for USF, while Pat Vanderslice fell to 0-2 after allowing seven earned runs on six hits in three and a third innings for the Hawks.

The teams will play the second of three on Saturday night at 6:30 p.m.
