BOCA RATON, Fla. – Graduate student Tim Ponto allowed just one run over five strong innings and sophomore Matt Maul notched a pair of hits, but the Saint Joseph's baseball teal ultimately fell to Florida Atlantic, 1-0, at FAU Stadium on Tuesday night.
Florida Atlantic (10-1) scored the game's only run in the bottom of the second when starting pitcher Sean Labsan helped his own cause with his first home run of the season.
The Owls threatened again in the third, loading the bases with one out, but Ponto fanned Christian Dicks before inducing a fielder's choice from Esteban Puerta to end the inning.
Saint Joseph's (4-4) got a runner into scoring position in the sixth, as Maul singled and stole second with two outs, but reliever Mark Nowatnick recorded a strikeout to keep the shutout intact.
The Hawks were unable to break through in the late innings, and Cameron Ragsdale threw a perfect ninth to secure his third save of the season.
Ragsdale secured the win for Labsan, who improved to 1-0 on the year after allowing one hit and striking out seven in three innings. Ponto was the hard-luck loser, falling to 0-1 after allowing three hits and fanning three in five innings.
The teams will wrap up the brief two-game set with a Wednesday matinee. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
