Lane's Game-Winner Lifts Women's Lacrosse over Duquesne, 9-8 OT

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA – Saint Joseph's freshman midfielder Rebecca Lane scored the game-winning goal just 1:11 into overtime to lift the Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team to a 9-8 win over Duquesne in Atlantic 10 Conference action on Sweeney Field on Friday afternoon. With their fourth straight win, the Hawks improve to 5-8 overall and 4-1 in the A-10 while Duquesne drops to 5-7 overall and 3-2 in league play.

Freshman midfielder Hayley Sabol won her third draw control of the game to gain possession for the Hawks in overtime to set up Lane for the game-winner.

"It was a great battle, both offensively and defensively," said head coach Alex Kahoe following the game. "Duquesne pushed us. Their offense definitely set some things up for us that tested our defense, and I'm really proud of our defense for stepping up and playing well together . . . We talk about competing for every ground ball, every opportunity. We came up with the possession, which is key when it goes into overtime and it's sudden victory."

Lane led the team in scoring with three goals and an assist while junior attacker Nora McCallion (2g, 1a), junior midfielder Maggie Egan (1g, 2a), and sophomore midfielder Aly Gormley (2g) added multi-point efforts.

The Hawks led 8-4 heading into the final 19:39, but Duquesne rattled off four consecutive goals - two on EMOs - over a 7:58 span to tie the score, 8-8.

Neither team would score in the final 9:02 to set up the overtime, and freshman midfielder Ally Beck played a significant part in that, causing two turnovers and scooping up two ground balls to regain possession for the Hawks twice in the final 6:25.

For the game, Saint Joseph's held a 22-18 edge in shots and 11-8 advantage in draw controls, while Duquesne won the ground ball battle 17-15. The Hawks forced six of the Dukes' 13 total turnovers on clear attempts and held them to 2-of-6 in free position opportunities.

Senior defender Caroline Hagan and Beck were good for three ground balls and three caused turnovers apiece on the back line while Sabol and senior midfielder Mallory Grey turned in three draw controls apiece.

Senior goalkeeper Genevieve Giblin (5-8, 4-1 A-10) made five saves in the full 61:11 and added three ground balls.

Duquesne had scored the first two goals of the game (28:20, 27:46) before Sabol (27:05) and Egan (21:24) combined to tie the score, 2-2, early in the first half.

Following a Duquesne goal that put the Dukes up 3-2 with 13:58 remaining in the first half, the Hawks tore off for five consecutive goals from McCallion (13:00), Lane (7:01), and Gormley (3:47) to close out the first half and then McCallion (27:13) and Lane (21:34) again to open the second-half scoring and to put the Hawks up by four, 7-3.

The Dukes inched back to within three goals at the 20:52 mark, but Gormley put away her second of the day to put the Hawks back up by four, 8-4, with 19:39 remaining in regulation before Duquesne went on its four-goal run.

Saint Joseph's returns to A-10 action this Sunday, April 17 vs. St. Bonaventure at 1:00 p.m. on Sweeney Field.
