AMHERST, Mass. – Freshman Lucas Rollins tossed six innings of one-run ball and the Hawk bullpen closed the door once again as the Saint Joseph's baseball team kicked off its weekend series at Massachusetts with a 3-1 win at Earl Lorden Field on Friday afternoon.
Rollins earned the first win of his collegiate career, allowing one run on five hits while striking out eight in six innings. Justin Aungst and Jack Stover bridged the gap to the ninth, where Ryan Kelly tossed a perfect inning with two strikeouts to earn his third save of the season.
Massachusetts (7-15 overall, 2-5 Atlantic 10) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third, loading the bases on three consecutive one-out hits before Dylan Morris beat out a relay throw on a fielder's choice, allowing Jon Avallone to score the game's first run.
Saint Joseph's (15-14 overall, 4-3 Atlantic 10) went ahead in the top of the fourth. Deon Stafford, Jr., led off with a walk and stole second base before advancing to third on a wild pitch with two outs. Charlie Coghlin then drew a walk before another wild pitch allowed Stafford to score the equalizer. On the play, Coghlin attempted to take third, and a throwing error by catcher John Jennings allowed Coghlin to scamper home with the go-ahead run.
The Hawks added an insurance tally in the sixth after John Brue walked, advanced to second on a walk by Matt Maul, and came in to score on a two-out single by Cal Jadacki.
Rollins improved to 1-3 on the year, while Ryan Moloney took the loss for the Minutemen, falling to 1-4. Rollins and the Hawk bullpen did not issue a single walk on the afternoon, while the Hawk lineup drew eight free passes. All three SJU runs reached base via walks.
The teams will play the middle game of the three-game set on Saturday. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
