AMHERST, Mass. – Freshman Tim Brennan unfurled a gem on Saturday, giving the bullpen the day off as the Saint Joseph's baseball team beat Massachusetts, 6-1, at Earl Lorden Field on Saturday afternoon.
Brennan went the distance, allowing one run on five hits while striking out eight and walking none to improve to 4-0 on the season.
Saint Joseph's (16-14 overall, 5-3 Atlantic 10) opened the scoring in the third as Peter Sitaras walked, stole second, then scored on an error after an infield single by Deon Stafford, Jr.
The Hawks extended the lead in the fifth, plating three to make it a 4-0 game. After two quick outs, Charlie Coghlin drew a walk and advanced to second on a single by Charlie Concannon. Matt Maul followed with a bases-clearing double to left center to push the lead to three. Cal Jadacki followed with an RBI double of his own to score Maul and chase starter Justin Lasko from the game.
Jadacki drove in two more in the seventh, singling home Concannon and Maul to increase the advantage to 6-0. Massachusetts (7-16 overall, 2-6 Atlantic 10) got on the board in the bottom of the frame as John Jennings hit a two-out solo home run to left for the only blemish on Brennan's afternoon.
Lasko took the loss, falling to 2-1, after allowing four runs, three earned, on seven hits in four and two-thirds innings.
Both Maul and Jadacki finished the afternoon with three hits apiece for the Hawks, while Concannon added two more as SJU pounded out 11 hits on the day.
Saint Joseph's will go for the series sweep on Sunday. First pitch is set for noon.
