Offense Explodes for 20 Goals in 20-9 Win over St. Bonaventure

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA – For the first time in 16 years, the Hawks scored 20 goals in one game as the Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team tore past St. Bonaventure, 20-9, in Atlantic 10 action on Sweeney Field on Sunday afternoon. With their program-record fifth straight win, the Hawks improve to 6-8 overall and 5-1 in league play and move into sole possession of second place in league standings.

Junior midfielder Maggie Egan matched a game-high seven points on three goals and four assists to go with a single-game career-high eight draw controls and three caused turnovers. Egan's second assist of the day at the 23:27 mark of the first half broke SJU's all-time, single-season assist record, formerly set by Shannon Hungate in 2001.

Freshman midfielder Rebecca Lane (1g, 6a) matched a game-high seven points while junior attacker Nora McCallion scored a game-high five goals and freshman midfielder Hayley Sabol turned in her first collegiate hat trick (3g, 1a). In all, 12 Hawks recorded at least one point for the Crimson and Gray as all 24 available players saw the field.

"For us, it was really important that we came out early and played St. Joe's lacrosse from the first draw," said head coach Alex Kahoe following the game. "It was really about maintaining that for 60 minutes. Overall, we came together, played hard, and really competed. Offensively, we were able to create opportunities with Nora, Bec, and Maggie really stepping up. Today was truly a team effort to help our team come out with the win."

Tied 1-1 early, the Hawks put together four consecutive goals in just over two minutes as Lane found both Egan (25:48) and Sabol (25:05) within 43 seconds of one another and Egan found Sabol (24:49) and junior attacker Sarah Smith (23:27) to put SJU up, 5-1.

The Bonnies would close the deficit to three goals after an SJU yellow card set up Scarlet Jaworski's EMO goal at the 21:44 mark.

However, Sabol fired right back just 33 seconds later with a free position shot to put the Hawks back up by four, 6-2, with 21:11 to play in the first half.

Lane would then find McCallion (19:58) and Smith (18:11) for two more scores before sophomore midfielder Aly Gormley closed out SJU's three-goal run with her first of the day to extend SJU's lead out to seven, 9-2, at the 16:18 mark.

St. Bonaventure would score the final three goals of the half to close its deficit to four goals, 9-5, heading into the halftime break.

From there, the momentum was in favor of the home team as the Hawks outscored the Bonnies 11-4 in the second half.

Coming out of the halftime break, SJU tore off five straight goals, with Lane opening the scoring just nine seconds in (29:51), McCallion netting three in a row (28:57, 26:57, 26:25), and senior midfielder Mallory Grey putting away an EMO at the 25:03 mark to extend SJU's lead by nine, 14-5.

The Bonnies would score two of the next three goals to close the deficit to eight entering the final 21:11, but Egan (16:50), sophomore defender Catie Vivian (15:40), and senior attacker Bianca Angstadt (14:12) put together a trio of goals in just under three minutes to take an 11-goal advantage over the Bonnies.

The game would see a scoring drought over the next seven minutes, before Egan put away her third goal of the day with 7:02 to play to push the Hawks ahead, 19-7.

Junior midfielder Taylor Dachowski's first goal of the season pushed the Hawks to the 20-goal mark.

For the game, Saint Joseph's held a 34-24 advantage in shots, including a 16-8 second half, and 20-11 edge in draw controls, including an 11-4 first half. The Hawks also won the ground ball battle, 16-14, and held the Bonnies to just 1-of-7 shooting from the eight meter.

Senior defender Caroline Hagan scooped up a single-game career high five ground balls and matched a game-high three caused turnovers, as SJU's school recordholder in career caused turnovers now owns 77 for her career.

Senior goalkeeper Genevieve Giblin (6-8, 5-1 A-10) made eight saves and allowed seven goals in the first 45:48 for her fifth consecutive win. Graduate student Ashley Alden made one stop and allowed SBU's final two goals in the final 14:12.

Saint Joseph's returns to league action this Friday, April 22 at VCU. Opening draw at Cary Street Field in Richmond, Va. is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
