NEWARK, Del. – The Saint Joseph's offense stayed hot on Tuesday, pounding out 14 hits as the Hawk baseball team chalked up a 9-4 win over Delaware at Bob Hannah Stadium. The win is the fifth in a row for SJU.
Saint Joseph's (18-14) led from wire to wire, scoring three times in the first and five in the second. Brian Lau started the scoring with an RBI double that scored Deon Stafford, Jr., who had reached on an error. Two batters later, Matt Maul ripped a two-out single up the middle to bring home John Brue, who had walked, and Lau to triple the advantage.
The Hawks then loaded the bases with nobody out in the second after Taylor Boyd singled, Graham Leib was hit by a pitch, and Marc Giacalone walked. After a wild pitch from Zach Flowers brought home Boyd, Stafford reached on an error for a second time, bringing home both Leib and Giacalone.
Brue followed with his eighth home run of the season to make it an 8-0 lead.
Delaware (21-15) scored single runs in the third and fourth on RBI singles by Doug Trimble and Kevin Mohollen, respectively, but a sacrifice fly by Lau in the top of the eighth to extend the lead to 9-2.
The Blue Hens added two more on a ground-rule double by Mohollen to close out the scoring in the bottom of the ninth.
Nick Roth was credited with the win, improving to 2-0 with two scoreless innings of relief. Flowers allowed eight runs on four hits in an inning-plus, taking the loss to fall to 1-2.
Saint Joseph's takes its winning streak to Saint Louis on Friday for the first of a three-game set. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m. Eastern.
