Softball Drops Pair To Fordham

MERION STATION, Pa. - Saint Joseph's junior Kaylyn Zierke slugged her team-leading fifth home run of the year, but the Hawks would fall to Fordham, 10-2, in six innings of a series opening doubleheader on Saturday at the SJU Softball Field. Saint Joseph's would fall to the Rams in the nightcap, 6-0.

In game one, Fordham (20-15, 4-1 Atlantic 10) opened the scoring in the top of the first as Amy Van Hoven doubled home Jessica Hughes to make it 1-0.

Madison Shaw added to the Rams' lead in the top of the second with a leadoff home run to make it 2-0. Van Hoven would add to her team's lead later in the inning as a Rams scored on a misplayed a grounder to the right side, extending Fordham's lead to 4-0.

Saint Joseph's (11-13-1, 1-3-1 A-10) got a run back in the bottom of the second to make it a 4-1 contest. Zierke led off with a double and after advancing to third on single by senior Sarah Yoos, would come around to score the Hawks' first run on a sacrifice fly by senior Hannah Dionne.

Shaw answered back for Fordham in the top of the third with an RBI double that scored Lindsay Mayer to make it 5-1.

The Rams added to their lead in the fourth with Mayer collecting an RBI on a double, while Shaw followed two batters later with an RBI single to open a 7-1 advantage.

Zierke got a run back for the Hawks in the fourth as she led off the bottom of the inning with a towering shot over the left field wall for her team-leading fifth home run of the year to bring SJU to within 7-2.

Sydney Canessa pushed Fordham's lead to 8-2 in the sixth with an RBI single, while Rachel Gillen making it 9-2 a batter later with an RBI double. Stephanie Ferri pushed the Rams' lead to 10-2 with an RBI single that scored Gillen.

The Hawks loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth, but couldn't get a runner to cross the plate as the Rams picked up the win.

For the game, Zierke went 2-for-2 with two runs scored. Rookie Ashley Ventura fell to 4-5 on the year after allowing five earned runs over 3.1 innings, while striking out one. Senior Anna Lauterbach worked 2.2 innings, striking out two, while allowing three earned runs.

Fordham opened the nightcap with four runs in the top of the first against SJU's Madison Clarke to take a 4-0 lead.

The Rams added to their lead in the fifth with a pair of runs to make it 6-0.

Clarke finished with a game-high nine strikeouts in game two, but fell to 5-4 on the season with the loss.

At the plate, Zierke, Yoos, Madeline Brunck and Cyndi Wilson accounted for SJU's four hits.

The Hawks and Rams cap their series on Sunday with a single game starting at 1 p.m. instead of the originally scheduled noon start.
