Box Score RICHMOND, Va. - The Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team racked up its sixth win in a row on Friday night, dominating VCU by a 15-4 score at Cary Street Field. The win is the sixth for SJU in Atlantic 10 play, besting the Hawks' previous high of five, set in 2009.
Saint Joseph's (7-8 overall, 6-1 Atlantic 10) pitched a first-half shutout, keeping the Rams off the scoreboard and taking a 7-0 lead into halftime. Junior attacker Nora McCallion ripped off the first four goals of the game, opening the affair with an unassisted goal just under five minutes in.
McCallion netted her 100th career point four minutes later, taking a feed from freshman midfielder Rebecca Lane and slotting it past goalkeeper Ria Peralta to double the lead. The pair would connect again at the 15:59 mark, and McCallion would strike once more with 13:50 to go in the half after an assist from senior midfielder Mallory Grey.
Junior attacker Sarah Smith and freshman midfielder Hayley Sabol followed with unassisted goals at 12:16 and 8:49, respectively, the first of a pair for each.
McCallion then played the role of facilitator for Lane, returning the favor as the freshman tallied a man-up goal with just under 30 seconds remaining in the stanza.
VCU (3-12 overall, 1-6 Atlantic 10) finally broke through on the opening sequence of the second half as Sky Hyatt got the Rams on the board just 19 seconds into the frame. The Hawks answered in quick fashion, as Smith tallied at the 28:34 mark before grey set up redshirt freshman attacker Morgan Lamey two minutes later to make it a 9-1 game.
Hyatt tallied again with 23:50 to go, but the Hawks scored the next four goals to salt away the game. McCallion fed sophomore midfielder Aly Gormley at the 21:55 mark before junior midfielder Maggie Egan converted back-to-back goals, the first one assisted by Lamey, to extend the lead to double-digits. Freshman midfielder Sinead Brierly got in on the act as well, putting the Hawks on top, 13-2, with 13:19 remaining.
The Rams scored consecutive goals as Hyatt finished off her hat trick and Molly Barcikowski cut the margin back to single digits with just under eight minutes to go, but Sabol bagged her second of the night on an assist from Grey with five minutes left, and freshman midfielder Michaela Cassidy took a feed from junior defender Maura Monti in the final minute to close out the scoring.
Senior Genevieve Giblin faced 10 shots on net on Friday, stopping eight of them. Peralta made six stops for the Rams. Saint Joseph's enjoyed a healthy 36-18 shot advantage on the evening, while teams split 20 draw controls right down the middle.
The Hawks return home on Sunday for their final home game of the regular season. It will be a Senior Day battle for second place as Saint Joseph's hosts George Mason, currently 5-2 in the Atlantic 10 and a game behind the Hawks in the race for a critical first round bye in the Atlantic 10 Championship. The game is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
After the contest, the Hawks will honor their departing student-athletes - Giblin, Grey, Ashley Alden, Bianca Angstadt, Courtney Emanuele, and Caroline Hagan - in a brief ceremony.
