Stafford Matches Record in Baseball's 3-2 Win at Saint Louis

ST. LOUISDeon Stafford, Jr., tied a school record with his 13th home run of the season on Saturday as his solo shot in the sixth inning gave the Saint Joseph's baseball team a 3-2 win over Saint Louis at the Billiken Sports Center.

Stafford matched the mark previously set last season by John Brue as the Hawks won their seventh game in a row and sent the Billikens to their 10th consecutive defeat.

With the game tied at 2-2, Stafford led off the sixth and took the first pitch from Miller Hogan over the fence in left for a 3-2 lead.

Saint Louis (16-24 overall, 7-4 Atlantic 10) put runners on the corners in the bottom half, but Tim Brennan fanned Alex King looking to end the inning.

The Billikens put another runner on in the eighth, but Devin Mahoney was doubled off by Peter Sitaras on a fly ball to center to erase the threat.

Ryan Kelly then worked around a lead-off single by Trent Leimkuehler to close out his fifth save of the season and second in as many days.

SLU opened the scoring in the second as Mahoney scored on a wild pitch before a Leimkuehler groundout plated Parker Sniatynski to make it 2-0.

Saint Joseph's (20-14 overall, 8-3 Atlantic 10) equalized in the third.  Matt Maul and Taylor Boyd hit consecutive one-out singles, and two batters later, Stafford added a single of his own. Maul came in to score and was hit by Mahoney's relay throw, allowing Boyd to come in and tie the game.

Brennan allowed five hits and two walks while striking out five in six innings. He improved to 5-0 on the season.  Hogan took the loss, allowing five hits and fanning five in seven innings. He fell to 3-6.

With the win, the Hawks reached the 20-win plateau for the sixth consecutive season, extending a program record.

SJU will go for win number 21 on Sunday. First pitch in the series finale is set for 1:00 p.m. Eastern.
