Box Score PHILADELPHIA – The Patriots scored the first 10 goals of the game and never trailed as the Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team had its six-game winning streak snapped, 16-7, by George Mason in Atlantic 10 Conference action on Sunday afternoon on Sweeney Field. With the loss, the Hawks drop to 7-9 overall and 6-2 in the A-10 while George Mason improves to 11-4 overall and 6-2 in league play.
Junior attacker Nora McCallion factored into five of SJU's seven scoring plays with a team-best three goals and team-best two assists on the day.
Led by Jacquelyn Spalding's five first-half goals, George Mason jumped out to a 10-0 lead by the halftime break.
The Hawks scored just nine seconds into the second half as junior midfielder Maggie Egan found McCallion to cut the differential to nine goals.
The Patriots scored back-to-back times (29:23, 27.39) to extend their lead to 11 goals, but McCallion put away her second goal of the day to keep the Hawks to within 10, 12-2, with 24:31 to play.
The scoring alternated consistently from that point, as George Mason put away its 13th goal (19:16) before Saint Joseph's sophomore midfielder Aly Gormley took a feed from freshman midfielder Rebecca Lane on an EMO to keep the Hawks to within 10, 13-3, with 15:02 remaining in regulation.
Down a player, Spalding, who finished the day with nine points, found GMU's Brooke Lorber to push the Patriots' lead back out to 11 goals, before McCallion (7:32) and Lane (4:51) put together SJU's only back-to-back scores of the day to close the deficit to nine, 14-5.
Both teams would put up two more goals apiece in the final 4:30 as the 16-7 score stood as time expired.
For the game, both teams took 20 shots, while George Mason held a slight 10-9 edge in ground balls and Saint Joseph's won 13 of 25 draw controls.
Senior goalkeeper Genevieve Giblin (7-9, 6-2 A-10) made one save and allowed 13 goals in 47:39, while graduate student goalkeeper Ashley Alden made a save and allowed three scores in 12:21.
Saint Joseph's will close the regular-season at George Washington this Saturday, April 30. Opening draw at the GW Lacrosse Field is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
GAME NOTES: Following the game, the Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse program honored seniors Bianca Angstadt, Courtney Emanuele, Genevieve Giblin, Mallory Grey, and Caroline Hagan alongside graduate student Ashley Alden in a Senior Day ceremony for their hard work and commitment to the program over the last four years... After this weekend's pair of games, senior defender Caroline Hagan improves the program record to 80 career caused turnovers... Junior midfielder Maggie Egan improves the program record to 28 single-season assists and ranks sixth in career assists (36)... Senior goalkeeper Genevieve Giblin ranks sixth in career saves (319) ... Senior attacker Nora McCallion's four assists this weekend broke her into the top-10 in career assists, where she currently ties for eighth (31)... The Hawks are now 2-9 all-time against the Patriots.
