Baseball Drops Series Finale at Saint Louis

ST. LOUIS – It was a tough afternoon on the diamond for the Saint Joseph's baseball team, as Saint Louis came out swinging and didn't stop, en route to a 22-6 win over the Hawks at the Billiken Sports Center on Sunday.

Saint Louis (17-24 overall, 8-4 Atlantic 10) scored five runs in the bottom of the first to open an early lead.  The Billikens then sent 18 hitters to the plate in the second inning, capitalizing on 11 hits and two Hawk errors to plate 13 runs in the frame.

Saint Joseph's (20-15 overall, 8-4 Atlantic 10) got on the board in the third as Matt Maul and Taylor Boyd led off with consecutive singles and Marc Giacalone followed with an RBI double.  Two batters later, John Brue hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Boyd.

SLU added one in the third and two more in the fourth, but the Hawks pegged one back in the top of the sixth as Brian Lau walked and came in to score on a single by Cal Jadacki.  Brue then singled home Boyd in the seventh for his second RBI of the day.

After a Billiken run in the eighth, Lau was hit by a pitch with two outs in the ninth.  Charlie Concannon followed with an RBI double and then came around to score when Graham Leib reached via an error.

Devin Mahoney earned the win for Saint Louis, allowing two runs on five hits in five innings.  Tim Ponto took the loss for SJU, falling to 1-4 after allowing five runs in one-third of an inning.

The loss ended a seven-game winning streak for Saint Joseph's, as well as a 10-game losing streak for Saint Louis.

The Hawks will look to bounce back on Tuesday night when they head to Citizens Bank Park for the Liberty Bell Classic championship game.  First pitch between Saint Joseph's and Rider is set for 7:30 p.m.
