MERION STATION, Pa. - The Saint Joseph's softball team dropped its series finale to Fordham, 12-4, in six innings on Sunday at the SJU Softball Field.
Fordham (21-15, 4-1 Atlantic 10) opened the scoring early on a bases loaded single by Rachel Gillen taht scored two to give the Rams a 2-0 lead in top of the first.
The Rams added to their lead in the second scoring four runs on two hits and taking advantage of a Hawk error to open a 6-0 advantage.
Saint Joseph's (11-14-1, 1-4-1 A-10) cut into the Rams' lead in the bottom of the third on senior Sarah Yoos' fifth home run of the season. With Madeline Brunck at first, Yoos delivered a long home run over the centerfield wall to bring the Hawks to within 6-2.
The Hawks continued to chip away at Fordham's lead in the fourth to make it 6-4. Senior Cyndi Wilson led off with a single and came in to score on a single by rookie Stacey Mayer as the ball glanced off a Fordham defender, leading to an errant throw to try and catch Wilson at third that sailed into foul territory allowing her to easily score from third. Mayer, who advanced to second on the error, would move to third on a wild pitch and come in to score on a sacrifice fly by classmate Taryn Grober.
Fordham added six insurance runs in the sixth to make it 12-4, with the Hawks failing to tally a run in the bottom of the inning to end the game.
For the game, Mayer went 2-for-2 with a run scored, while Yoos drove in two on her fifth home run of the season. Senior Anna Lauterbach fell to 2-5 on the year as she allowed 11 runs over 5.1 innings, while striking out five.
Saint Joseph's returns to action Wednesday at Drexel at 4 p.m.
